Palm Lifedrive is cool... but Palm OS is making the switch to Linux though.

Do you think that there are different palms used for different hospitals, or should I just go out and get one before I start clinicals? I know I need one, I was just wondering if I should wait until I actually start to buy one, or if I should buy myself one for my bday in April, considering I will be starting my clinicals sometime over the summer.

    Thanks,
    Nagy

I'd wait actually. I remember before that Palm used to come out with a few model here and there sometimes during May or at least annouce price drops during then. Also, depending on the hospital, it might be beneficial to get the Palm Treo 650 over the standalone PDAs.(some hospitals allow you to have Cell phones versus those others that believe it affects the imaging/diagnostic equipment). Kern actually bought its residents the Treos a few years ago.

Oh my yes get a Treo 700 if you get ANY PDA. It is only available with Verizon Wireless, but you don't have to get service and can use it just as a PDA. The 700 is the newest one and uses Windows Mobile Media unlike Palm OS which is on most palms. It can use Verizons EV-DO broadband service (costs extra a month of course) but you can have your email pushed to you and still make calls and do any pda functionality. I had a Treo 650 before I moved to the Island and I miss is soooo bad. They weren't kidding when they call the Smartphones "Crackberry's" They are just as addictive! If you want to use another carrier, ie Sprint, Cingular, they all have the Treo 650, but not the 700. Good luck!

I'd still go with the 650 as it uses the Palm OS.. Still has more Medical programs than Pocket PC(for all you PocketPC fanboys, it still does, live with it)

Ok, here's a tough question for those with a cell phone (non-PDA) already... what is a good Palm vs good PocketPC?

And is there a website with said programs to buy for it that has an inclusive listing?

As a medical student we need to use ePocrates, diagnosaurus, up to date and a calendar/contacts type program that can preferably syncronize with your computer. I have a crappy 4 year old toshiba POS with 256MB that does the job just fine, and also plays Pocket Tiger Woods and Bejeweled at a decent frame rate. Go on ebay and get a "decent" model pocket PC or palm from about 2 or 3 years ago. It will be more than enough.

To answer your question, there tend to be more medical software for the palm, but these are esoteric random programs that you will download and go, "cool!"-- but never actually use. And if there was a "must have" program for either Pocket PC or Palm, both have emulators for the other, so it's really a moot point. Get either one and you'll be fine.

After you're and attending, then get the most ****** PDA money can afford-- or if you can afford it now, go for it. But it's overkill if you get one of the latest, greatest PDA's now, in my opinion.

actually, attendings around here carry virtually nothing. Sometimes a stethescope and most likely a pen. The idea of going higher in the ranks is to carry less... not more.
