    Some Questions about AUA

    Advertisements

I am a prospective student seeking matriculation in the fall. After going through the forum, I have some concerns about people getting dismissed from AUA. What are some reasons you have seen primarily for the dismissal? I know doing bad stuff will get someone dismissed - I would never do that. What worries me is that the school has some crazy high bar for doing well, that other Caribbean (and maybe some US) schools don't have. I have some offers to go to other schools but wanted to go to AUA because of what I read about the rotations. Now I am wondering if I would even get to that point. Can someone tell me what happens with the dismissal stuff, why it happens, and what people do if it happens? I have been doing pretty well - I have a 3.4 UG-GPA but a 21 on the MCAT --- so standardized testing was never my thing. Thanks for your help and maybe I will see ya in a couple months.

Work hard and you will succeed. You get dismissed if you can't pass comp shelf.

You never get dismissed if you cheated. If that were the case, all the professors at AUA would get thrown out. AUA cares less if you cheat or cut corners. As long as they make money. They know there are limited clinical spots. As long as you make it to Med 5.

Think about it: the provost threatened to leave for a very legit reason, and all self-respecting professors left AUA before this "cheating" scandal got this blown out of proportion. The success of graduates that come only come because of the students own personal experience which may include tremendous skill in time-management or having been transferred in (to repeat a semester or so) with the medical knowledge/resources they attained previously that was still insufficient to pass in their previous school (the latter being a great chunk of the class at AUA). So, you're right, this is a fact that even AUA knows but will they disclose it at their open-house events? Of course not.

There isn't anything we can do other than work hard. I still don't know why AUA increased step2 comp pass mark to flush some more out. Makes me wonder if the comp shelf for step 1 did in fact get leaked or AUA adjusted the grades of certain students. The latter I can see happening since AUC pass mark is 47. I don't know how 50 kids still got that 72.

Could you please explain this COMP shelf exam thing? Is it before step 1 or before step2? Does the school use it to make sure that you'd pass USMLE 1 and 2 or, in other words, weeding people out to make sure they keep their high USMLE pass rate high?

Comp shelf at aua no way determines step scores. It's been proven that students cheat on comp and manage ok step 1 scores get. Caught again in clinicals cause they can't manage against US students. Apparently our previous admin with nagra and his Manipal faculty got Nailed for leaking out comp shelf to certain students. Hopefully that changes aua.
