I withdrew from Ross during 3rd sem. Will AUA make me start from 0 as a transfer?

Here's a story as old as time: I'm a Ross student who would like to transfer to AUA.

I had to repeat first semester at ross after failing and have now withdrawn from 3rd due to personal issues at home (I won't bore you with the details). I got a C my first semester (the one I actually passed) and a C+ the second. I had a 60 average during 3rd when I withdrew. Re-applying to Ross is not an option. I'm from California, so AUA is my only option at this point.

I've heard that AUA will most likely take me, but that I may have to start from 0. I'm already a bit older than most medical students and I've already sunk a tremendous amount of money into my first year at Ross, so this is a huge deal to me.

My ideal scenario would be AUA allowing me to start as a 2nd or 3rd semester this fall, but I realize this is unlikely. Could any current or former AUA kids or anyone else with insight please shed some light on this me?

Also, please let me know how you're faring at AUA if you're a transfer.

I'm pretty anxious here, so I'd really appreciate your responses.

I did not go the Carib route, but I was probably a good bit older than you when I (essentially) started medical school over again after having to withdraw in the US. It took me just over 4 years to graduate from my restart date. From my experience, the best advice would be to get back in, get through, and get into residency... finish, and it will not matter much that you had to repeat a year.

(FWIW, I am an intern in Switzerland and I'm 46. I know that has nothing to do with AUA, but it is my unsolicited .02 based on the situation. )

I really appreciate the encouragement in your reply, devildoc.

I know you understand how tempting it is for me, a 31 year old, to cut my losses and end my involvement in medicine. Still, I can't imagine myself doing anything with my life other than treating patients one by one. I simply want to be a family doctor. At this point, I have nothing else in my life other than medicine.

Get it done, Triple-H. That is exactly how I felt. There was nothing else professionally that remotely appealed to me, I knew that I could get it done (and that the interim dean who forced me to withdraw was talking out of her bottom), and I had the good fortune to have a better half who was game for the adventure. Best of luck to you, just do not look for another chance... make this one count.

(Oh, and awesome VMD-moniker, by the by.)

Thanks, devildoc. It's good to be reminded that others have been down the same road as me and have succeeded.

I talked to a ross student that was a semester ahead of me that barely failed 3rd semester (he had two passing grades and one failing grade) and he was accepted into AUA's 3rd semester for this fall. Unlike him, I withdrew from 3rd rather than take a failing grade.

The posts on this website regarding transferring to AUA give me the impression I'd have to start from 0. Hopefully other AUA folks on valuemd can give me some information on where others like me have been placed. I'm quite nervous over this. but the glimmer of hope that I may start at AUA as a 3rd is helping me get by.

By the way, I didn't realize my moniker had any meaning other than being a pun using "hungry hungry hippos," a popular children's boardgame. What is VMD?

VMD=Value MD... this website. No further meaning is needed, I dug that game when I was a kid.

If you finished the first 2 semesters at Ross, there is no reason why you can't start from Med3 at AUA. When I was on the island I had friends who transferred in from Ross that had to start all over, but they had failed Med2 at Ross and at the time Ross was splitting up its classes to cover through Med1and2 (e.g., Biochemistry was done over Med1 and Med2) hence having to start over.
