    February 2014 admissions question

    Advertisements

Hi everyone, this is my first post ever on valuemd. Im planning to apply to AUA for the February 2014 term. My stats are like follows

    MCAT-18O (taken July 2010)

    Biology 1 and 2(with lab)- B/B
    Chemistry 1 and 2(with lab)- A-/B-
    Physics 1 and 2(with lab)- B-/A-
    English 1 and 2- B+/ C+
    Organic chemistry 1 and 2 ( no lab)- C/C
    Organic chemistry lab- A-
    Microbiology- B-
    Genetics- B
    Pharmacology- B
    Anatomy-F
    Statistics (retook once)-From F to A

    GPA- 3.07/ sci GPA- 2.8

I've worked at the emergency room, shadowed, and have good LOR's. The admitted students, and people who have experience with admissions, what are my chances for February 2014? Also I would be willing to start at the pre-med if necessary.

I wouldn't consider myself an expert on admissions since the criteria I'm sure has changed since I was a med 1. But I will offer an opinion. B averages are generally good but when crucial med classes like anatomy show poor grades, that is usually a red flag. Your grades are decent and though the science GPA is a little lower I think it still qualifies. I would say you have a chance of starting Med 1 although it is more likely that they will offer you the BSEP program.

The way AUA is going, I would suggest to improve your GPA and try a US DO school by getting a good MCAT. Reason being with fingers crossed everything works out for the benefit of AUA is that clinical rotation spots and residency affiliations have pretty much taken a big hit due to rampant cheating. And suppose you do exceedingly well at AUA - you will find it extremely difficult to transfer to a US medical school with the school gaining a negative reputation.
