Dismissed from big 4, what to do next + residency

    Advertisements

    Hi y'all,
So I was academically dismissed from one of the big 4 in the Caribbean (failed max classes). I had a few questions as to what I should do next.

I was considering applying to another caribbean school and transferring my credits--however I was wondering how this would affect my residency chances having the academic dismissal on my record.

Another option I was considering was retaking the MCAT and do an SMP starting this fall, and applying for DO for the fall of 2014--but not sure if I should tell or not tell DO schools about my history in the caribbean. Any thoughts on this? If I do tell them, will they automatically reject me?

A third option I was thinking about was applying for PA school or Podiatry school as last option as I am not getting any younger and don't want to lose too much more time if none of the above options are worth pursuing. Any thoughts on this as well?

He sorry to hear about your situation, but in all honesty you should not be to worried and continue on with your journey to becoming a doctor. While the Big 4 have there pros and cons, there are now over 25 schools in the caribbean. I went to Windsor University not as prestigious as the rest, but it got the job done and my overall cost for getting my degree was around 68k, alot less then my other counterparts. I ended up doing rotations with people from the big 4 as well as US students. Also during residency time, At almost every interview there was a Big 4 candidate, but in the eyes of most of the programs we were all just caribbean grads.

If things like California licensing and New York rotations do not matter to you, then take a look at some of the other schools out there. Transferring is fairly easy and you could be continuing your studies very soon, rather then take a semester off or wasting time.

    Just so food for thought.

Thats pretty poor advice. There is a huge difference between failing out of a school, which will 100% need to be disclosed and simply starting at lower tier school like windsor. I do agree that many of residency directors see us all lumped together as Caribbean students but being dismissed is a huge, huge red flag

I was dismissed from AUC for failing too many classes in Aug 2008. Went home, worked my butt off as a substitute teacher for a few months, regrouped, and got applications sent out. Was accepted to AUA w/ advanced standing (got credit for courses already completed) and started in January 2009. Cruised through 2 semesters at AUA with a 3.0, completed 5th semester, did well on all my USMLEs, was proactive w/ scheduling clinicals, and prematched in September to my top choice residency. Anything is possible, but you're going to need to work extremely hard and have luck on your side going forward.
