Help Ease my Worries about Financial Aid

    Hey everyone,

A little back story: So I went to AUC and was dismissed near the end. While I struggled for various reasons, I think I got my stuff together and I'm ready to try med school again. I was accepted into AUA and will begin in February 2013 as a third semester.

I really want to go, but I have heard only horror stories about Financial aid and I would already be coming in with around $52,000 dollars in debt. I heard that I can't defer these loans (even if I do go to AUA for some reason I was never told), which means I'll have to basically do the three year unemployment thing and pay the interest (around $170 a month), which I can live with. I just don't want to go if I'm going to be (pardon my vulgarity here) screwed by financial concerns. I know that I qualify for the private bank loans and how much I get, but I heard these are unreliable. Also, I really don't want to make my family pay anymore money (they are the reason my loans are only at $52,00). So please, somebody, anybody, please make me feel better about the Financial Aid. How do you pay it? How does it work in clinicals? Etc.

TL;DR- I want to go to AUA, but don't know much about financial aid and how it works. Please make me feel more confident in my decision.

    Sincerely,
    A (hopefully) future student

Congrats on the upcoming wedding, Arkie... and sorry about the loan nonsense. That does bite the weasel.

Wow, Arkie's description just made me even more anxious. When they told me that the financial aid was gone, I almost took it as a sign that maybe I should pursue other routes, but it just came back for the February '13 class. I'm still totally on the fence, but I really appreciate everyone's input.

Yeah, this isn't as pleasant. Especially with no federal loans to help ease the interest.

So quick question for US medical students, are they paying back their loans during residency?

Some do, some don't. You don't have to. You can do residency forbearance but the juice is always pumping.
