    Passed Step 1 Deadline

    Advertisements

Just wanted to know what happens if you pass the 1 year deadline to appear for step 1. Is there anyway to extend it with a sound reason why I didn't attempt to write it? I had finished 5th semester in dec 2009 and passed the comp in late feb with a 64. I had reasons like financial and also family problems that made it difficult to register for step 1. I just want to know if anyone was in this situation and what happened. Thanks for your responses.

i am not completely sure about the policy and the consequences... but i would def call up someone in the school to find out.. and see if u can take a leave of absence for those reasons... before your time expires.. i think they would be more willing to extend the time if u speak to them ahead of time..

When exactly are you planning to take it? I know some people who finished 5th semester in Dec. '09 also, and they took step at the beginning of August. AUA hadn't contacted them prior to see what was taking them so long, but once they took it and sent in they're score they received the clinical packet and were put on a rotation list just like everyone else.

Am planning to take the step in dec if finances, but i think latest by end of jan. I am gonna quite work and get back to studying for the step. Its just been a very difficult year. I called then in june cause I thought you had to do the steps within 6months, but the lady I spoke to said that its within a year. I thought would be able to register for Nov that didn't work out. So was wondering what the consequence is if I don't make it. Will call them to find I hope they don't tell me to repeat a semester

ive heard that if you dont take step within a yr after step they may make you take comp again.. so the rumor is
but it is always better to check and get it in writing what is expected

You have one year to take AND pass the exam. This is what I was told over the phone when I contacted them a while back. Therefore you need results from the exam back by the end of December in your case, from what I understood AUA telling me.

If you pass the one year mark, the situation varies depending on the student but you get withdrawn from AUA and must "re-enroll". It's a fairly simple process usually, the re-enrollment.

After being re-enrolled, some I have heard didnt have to take the COMP, some had to take it and pass. Some I heard were told to repeat 4th semester. It really depends on the student and what AUA decides. Therefore its best to contact AUA New York office to find out what the situation will be with you.

If you want to avoid all hassles, take it by November 15 so you get your results by the end of December. If you want to take it in December, ask AUA if will be within the year timeline if you receive your results in 6 weeks from time of exam.

I spoke to AUA a few times regarding this just to confirm and make sure the stories were straight....but you have to TAKE the exam by December 31st...even if the results come after that, the exam should be taken by then...

i'd use 3 months after the end of 5th semester as the upper limit for studying. you are seriously going to forget everything from med1-med4 and will start freaking out. i've seen it happen to plenty of my classmates who were scared to take it and kept pushing their date back while watching their scores drop

Just spoke to them am in big trouble. What they have told me is if I don't write the exam by the end of the year I will be withdrawn from the program and will have to re-enroll. I will have to fill out a re-enrollment application and go in front of an admissions committee to explain my situation. Based on that they will decide if I should do the comp again or retake 4th semester. What should i do? I don't have the money right now to register for the usmle and neither am I prepared. I just can't quite my job yet until my dad finds another job. God this year has been soo bad
