Mandalay housing not really fully furnished

    Advertisements

So I'm Med 1 just arrived and living in Mandalay. The housing description said Group I housing is "fully furnished". However, none of the rooms here have a desk or a dresser!

Now, how can we as students not have a desk? A desk is an essential piece of furniture for a student. All other housing options provide a desk except for Mandalay. I had to go to Townhouse (local store here) and buy a desk and chair for around $170 US.

When I complained to Student Services during registration about the lack of a desk, the woman said "that is a quirk about Mandalay and most students buy their own desks". This seems unreasonable as one would expect a desk to be part of the apartment. It never even occurred to me to ask anyone beforehand if there would be a desk, as all other university provided housing I have lived in before had a desk. I wish they would have listed in the housing brochures that there is no desk or dresser in Mandalay, I would have chosen other housing then.

So now, I paid for my own desk and am using my suitcases as trunks. I spoke to the landlord and he informed me that it is the school's responsibility to provide the desk and dresser. So to any school official reading this, would you please consider providing desks and dressers? Thanks.

Hey.. are you in a single apartment in Mandalay? as in.. do you have your own bedroom + bathroom?

If so, I have currently registered in Jacobs with a single + bathroom. I guess as youve mentioned, it will come with a desk + dresser. If you want I would be happy to buy your desk off of you and switch apartments..

    Let me know

Yes, I have my own bedroom and bathroom, but I share the living room and kitchen with a roommate.

Thanks for the offer, but in spite of not having the desk + dresser it's still the best housing here and I'm happy otherwise.

Hi there just read your post about not having a dresser or a desk at Mandalay. I stayed at Mandalay for two semesters. I'm letting you know that this is what you get for staying at Mandalay; it's ridiculous but if you'd like you could bring this to Pat, but I doubt there would be a change. Also, you probably don't want to talk to the property owner unless there's something wrong with the place (aka water leakage, defective lighting).

I bought my own desk and chair too when I first got here. It sucks but you need them.

My words may sound harsh but unfortunately this is the reality with AUA and Antigua. By the end of Med 1 I was hateful to the point that I even hated myself (and the fact that I was in Antigua). But you'll learn how to deal/ignore it along the time. Hang in there, the first two months are the toughest.

    Make friends and good luck!
