Whats with the Shelf situation and retakes?

    Advertisements

Whats going on with the shelf scores from this past semester for all the classes? Why are students who failed the shelf getting a SECOND chance to pass the shelf? If I remember correctly, in the syllabus a score of less than 56 on the shelf is automatic failure.

    Whats going on?

    Time to email Mr. *****?

im sure all of the past semester students who are now med 5, 6, 7, 8 etc have passed basic sciences because of AUA's curving of shelfs. NMBE curves once and aua curves again, this time aua did not curve any shelfs. just be grateful that ur not in basic sciences right now .. no need to kick the students who are in this mess right now

They never curved the shelf exams. According to Dr. S if the teachers at AUA would start curving the shelf scores they would be fired.

Things are always changing at AUA. No one knows exactly what is going on with all the shelf stuff other than administration and I'm sure they have a good reason for doing what they're doing. The best thing to do is to focus on your own scores and your own work. Worrying about others isn't going to do anything for you.

you need to relax and stop worrying about other people... if you failed im sure you would want another chance....

concentrate on your own studies and worry about doing well for yourself

who cares what other people do... take care of your own business

actually, he is 100% right. The AUA rule book states less than a 54 is a failure. I have seen this happen. However once and awhile a favorite or two will be given the chance to repeat a score below 54. This is not right. Teachers are getting nicer and nicer (not necessarily a bad thing) and are allowing students to pass mini's who should not be passing. Then they fail shelf and get a second whack at the same exact test that they can now ask friends for answers too.

Actually I just took the shelf exam the past semester and passed well above a 56. I studied and studied hard for the mayday. Ofcourse I would appreciate another chance if I failed, but what about the effort given to NOT get there in the first place which is not put forth by other students?

How the hE!! do you get another chance to take a shelf exam after you fail it once, seriously??? These kids excuses are, "I had an A going into the class and failed the shelf". YAH maybe if you didnt cheat on every quiz or exam you wouldnt have nutted yourself on the shelf and gotten a 40 or 50 something. Shame on these students, they are lucky as heck the school is a second chance and they are getting a 3rd 4th i dunno 10th chance to REPEAT THIS.

I do care about myself and I do what I can for myself. Like I said, i just passed them MYSELF. I obviously can handle it(and worked for it) while they cannot, lets differentiate those who work and those who dont. No second tries, the patient is dead, its over. I do however have a problem with my classmates who ruin the semester exam curves by cheating and then bomb the shelf, showing how stupid they really are!!!!

If I even got a cookie for passing on the first try, I wouldnt feel this raged

All the students who failed are getting a chance to retake it. This is has nothing to do with favoritism.

I see what you're saying, but the fact that you passed the shelf on your own with hard work should give you enough satisfaction to give it a rest. No student will become a licensed physician ever by cheating through med school. They all hit a brick wall eventually.

the step 1 is that brick wall...so no worries. If you studied and passed then go on...those who cheated or whatever....won't make it to far...

I agree with Vick, Step 1 is a brick wall and unless you have learned your material there is no way you can pass. I have seen people who never failed a single course failing step 1 more than twice. So just learn your material and you will see the result.
