    Rejected...what now?

    Advertisements

I got the news yesterday that I was rejected. I kind of knew my chances of being accepted were low especially with the number of students already accepted into the Sept '10 class. Long story short it boils down to my low gpa holding me back. I'm looking for advise on what I should do now to improve by those who have been in this situation or even those that have not been. I'm kind of lost as to what I should do to gain acceptance to AUA or possibly any other carribean med school. Does anyone think applying to a different term will help?
    Thanks all in advance

Have you consider doing a post bach course? Do well take the MCAT and apply to a DO or US school. All hope is not gone. Just don't resort yourself to the caribbean.

Call or email Mr W (VP for enrollment) and ask him to take a look at your file. Get an idea on why you were rejected, and ask if there's anything you can do to improve your application. You can also ask about the possibility of going into premed at aua. Like i said, speak to Mr W for additional guidance.

I am thinking about doing that...I do have to take organic chem lab which I will take in the winter session. And I will take my MCATs sometime in January.

Think positive. You may have a low gpa but may have hands on experiences that I may not have. Your LORs may be better than mine. I'm sure I'm not the only one in this situation but my case is a little unique.

Here are some bits of advice from a current 4th semester student. If you get rejected, I suggest you seriously re-consider your drive for medicine. This is important, you will be making a huge investment with time, family and your own efforts. You will be over 30 without a paycheck, while your lawyer and business friends are buying cars and houses at 30.

Personally, I would bust my butt and retake the MCAT and try to get in the school that way. This will lift your spirits and prove to yourself that you have scope.

Trust me, this program is not easy at all. We have much less enrollment than Ross, or some of the other carribean schools. We have many ex Ross students come here for more than just a smaller enrollment.

The school has tightened up considerably from what these posts will reflect. Previously, students would have easy access to cheat and other things, and that has now not only been paired with severe consequences such as dismissal, but will leave you in the dust for NBME shelf exams to pass individual courses which are all web-based and cut out those people who do neck exercises during exams.

If they offer you a pre-med seat to prove yourself, dont consider yourself set, you must get high grades in pre-med which is also not easy, to be entered in the Med program. If you are on loans, you will have to maintain atleast a 2.75 to continue recieving your loans here.

Bottom line: If this is for you, prove it to yourself first, dont find alternate ways to get in, work hard and get accepted, and come here with that motivation. The students that came here and mentioned they wanted to leave right away, cheated, partied, never made it, or are having trouble passing the Step 1. This is a big decision so please make sure you have given it full thought and then move in that direction.

A physician is a physician and must pass the US boards to practice, whether he is from Asia, Africa, the Carribean or California, he must pass licensing exams to "make it". When there is a will, there is a way, but you must strap on your boots and be ready for the ride. Work hard good luck!
