    Rechecking baggage in San Juan

    Advertisements

    Hey everyone,

I just booked my flight back to Antigua for the end of August. I'm flying American to San Juan and then have 2.5 hours before my flight leaves on LIAT to Antigua. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware of all the horror stories before booking this ticket. Does anybody have any information on the amount of time you'd need to go through security, get your boarding passes and recheck luggage at the San Juan airport?

I saw that they have a 15 lb. limit on carry ons. Do they actually weigh them?

Any information related to this would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

2.5 hours should be plenty of time, but keep in mind that when liat's plane is full, they can't take all the luggage, so bags are thrown off and will take another day or 2 to reach the island..and since it's antigua and you're not a tourist, you'll have to drive BACK to the airport to pick them up and go through customs. As for the carry on luggage, they really just look at the size..if it looks like it won't fit, they'll make you check it.

Thanks a lot for that info. That settles my nerves a bit.

Do you know if they consider a purse a personal item or carry on? To avoid going through the hassle of rechecking luggage, I'm hoping to bring a carry on and a personal item - also, in case they can't fit my carry on, I was hoping to slip my computer in my purse.

I think you were allowed 1 "personal" item and 1 carry on. As long as the purse isn't overly big or anything, you should be fine. But if you want to be 100% sure, call them or check their website for the most UTD baggage info.

Alright thanks a lot for the info.

If I do decide to check one bag, do you think it would be cutting it too close with time? Like I said, I should get in at 12 and my flights scheduled to leave at 2:30. I read that you have to get to the gate 45 min. beforehand or else they give away your seat. So that would be an hour and 45 minutes to get to our departing gate.
