I would like to ask anyone who took either PASS or Kaplan review courses for Step-1 exam and tell me which one they would recommend and why? Please keep in mind that Step-1 Exam format changed as of May 15 of this year (2010), so I am wonderig if either of these review courses updated their review material based on this new change?
Any feedback is greately appreciated and thanks for your time.

I took Kaplan for Step 1, and thought it was really good. Kaplan has a proven track record, which isn't true for PASS. I watched a few PASS videos and thought they were horrible, at least for board prep. Kaplan is a bit pricey, but I found it to be extremely helpful. I'm not sure how step 1 changed recently, but I'm sure they update their course soon after changes in the test take place.

to be honest if you want to get the best reply for the change in the USMLE format and kaplan teaching style, you should contact kaplan itself... ofcourse they may not deny tht they have not changed ther format but i am sure they have adjusted to it somehow... depending on when you wanna take your step you should try to find out from someone who has taken kapalan before the changes and someone who jst took it and try to compare em...

personally for me i dint take either....soo i am not going to give any opinion.. if you wanna kno tht is it possible to do it without Kaplan my answer is YES.. got a 91/221... and i know someone else who got a 99... rmr kapalan is only for review and u will forget most of the stuff after you get of an 8 hr class... the main thing is what you do after those 8 hours

    hope this helps

Thanks, BiGbLuE. I will try to contact if someone took the exam after the May 15th change in Usmle Step-1 and that took either Kaplan or Pass review. I just don't want to waste time and money if it is the same old 7 kaplan books or same Pass old vidoes and notes. From what I have heard step-1 changed totally in terms of difficulty and length of the questions as of May 15th, and mostly clinical. And UsmleWord Q-bank which was very useful in the past in preparing for the exam is no longer the same either. I even contacted Usmleworld and they said that yes they are right now in the process of revising their Qbank but it takes time to complete the whole thing. I also contacted Kaplan and Pass they were mumbling when I asked about the change as of May15th and I became discouraged as it seems both Kaplan and Dr. F. from Pass is still using the same material and I think it takes some time for them to catch up and update their review material after May15 change. So, now I am open in considering other options beside Kaplan and Pass. Thanks.

looks like rahulb is giving advice based upon his own experience of not taking a course and scoring well on the step. personally, I wouldn't mind giving you advice to contact me, and set up a payment plan instead of taking kaplan. the point is, there are many roads to do well on the exam. no one out here can give you a straight answer about kaplan or pass, but we can all give you advice based upon our own experiences.
My experience - I did Kaplan and scored a 99. Rahulb didnt use kaplan, but I'm sure used kaplan books, but maybe he didnt even do that. Who cares what everyone did, honestly. The only person that should be answering the question of what your study plan should consist of - is YOU. What are u comfortable with? A lot of people come on this forum looking for the secret of getting a good score. Is there a secret? no. study hard, not only to learn the information, but to ease your mind when test day comes - knowing that you worked very hard for this test. I don't know, I'm sure I could've gotten away without doing kaplan. actually, i'm positive. But did kaplan help ease my mind more? 100%.
do what you want. but be weary of letting others give you some secrets of doing well. if you search hard on these threads, you will see 400 different ways of attacking this test. A lot of these people have similar scores. That should be enough of a reason to go with what you feel comfortable with, knowing there isn't one single formula for success.

    good luck
