    USMLE score

    Advertisements

    Hello,

What is good score in USMLE step -1 for getting residency? I scored 86% in my 1st attempt. I am confused now, Will there be problem for me in getting residency? I have following questions in my mind, I will appreciate, if some one can answer my questions:
    1. Shall I repeat Step-1 Exam?
    2. Will I be able to secure residency with this score?
    3. Shall I need to work extra hard in my step-2 exams?

Your detailed reply will help me.

    1. Once you pass step 1, that's your score. You CANNOT take it again. (if you had failed it, you can retake the exam)
    2. What specialty do you want? Different ones require different scores.
    3. You should always work extra hard on any exam. But again, it'll depend on what kind of residency you want, how competitive it is, etc.

Also, FWIW, the two-digit score is not a percentage/percentile. It is simply a two-digit score corresponding with your three digit score, and comparing your performance with others who took the same exam.

Cyberia is correct. You passed Step One, so you cannot re-take the exam. That 86 is yours to keep forever and ever. Extremely competitive specialties are probably not in the cards at this point, unless you have connections and really kick tail on Step Two. There are a lot of factors in the match, so you need to determine exactly what you want to do, and what reasonable expectations are at this point.

    Good luck!
