    Extended Basic Sciences

I have heard about AUA having some form of extended basic science where you can reduce your courseload per semester? Is there anyone familiar with this program? How does it works and does it affect you anyways? Thanks

You basically take one less class than the regular MD 1 curriculum. So for example in term 1 instead of taking 3 classes (anat/histo/DPS), you take only 2 (anat/dps). At the end of each term you may take the missing course like histo as a block course which runs roughly for 2 weeks..I don't know if the college is still offering block courses every term so that might affect you. But if they are then you will be on time as someone who starts regular MD1 as long as you pass the course that is in 2 weeks. If not, then you have an extra term on the island.

Here is the actual extended basic sciences vs real basic sciences curriculum.
Regular MED1 = Anatomy, Histology, and DPS
Extended MED1 = Anatomy and DPS

Regular MED2 = biochem, neuro, genetics, and physio
Extended MED2 = biochem and neuro

Regular MED3 = micro, immuno, behavioral, and path1
    Extended MED3 = genetics, physio, micro/immuno?

    Regular MED4 = path2, ICM, and pharm
    Extended MED4 = behavioral?, path1, pharm?

Regular MED5 = off the island
    Extended MED5 = Path 2 and ICM

the ? denote classes that I am not positive if I have them in the right semester. hopefully someone can confirm for you

you forgot histo... i believe the policy now is that is you take and finish histo over the 1st block after med 1, it is included in in your med 1 semester tuition and you are eligible for all 4 med 2 classes.

Can you request this option during enrollment or is there certain criteria to meet?

Yes, you can opt. to take less classes. However be aware that you almost certainly will have conflicts with future scheduling. Example: People who did not take histology last semester, are finding it conflicts with every Med 2 class this semester as only one section is offered. Keep in mind if you are taking that route, you will not be able to schedule every class every semester.

Personally, I would take the full load in med 1 and see how you do. You can always drop histo after the first exam if you feel you're not doing well with a full course load and put yourself into extended **.

According to the Academics Dean on campus, the histology course can be taken after the first break (block) and then you'll be caught up with the regular Med 2 classes hence out of Extended.
