Well when I was in 5th, they made us sign a document that we had to take Step 1 within 6 months of completing 5th but I believe that if you are not on loans you may take upto a year. Now ofcourse it depends on your financial situation and also the current clinical situation but if you don't take it after a year, you have to retake the comp. Now this might have changed within the past year or so

I believe the 6 month rule still applies. Only difference is you do not have to sign anything anymore saying you will take it. Also, if you want more than 6 months you can take it, you just need to submit some type of extension form. My advice is to NOT wait this long though. The degree of difficulty of the STEP does not require 6 months of studying. If your studying everyday 2-3 months should be PLENTY and 4 months is overkill IMO

It's still 6 months. We just got this email at the end of 5th.
Attached to this message are three forms that must be filled out and mailed or brought into my office. Please DO NOT fax or e-mail me these forms as the New York office requires the originals, with your signature. The Clinical Leave of Absence form is a document that lets you know how much time the school allows you to study for Step 1. By signing this form, you understand that you will be given 6 months to study for Step 1. If you take more time, there may be negative repercussions especially in terms of loans going into repayment. I have enclosed an example of how the form is to be filled out. If you do not know when you plan to take Step 1, please leave this field blank. Please fill out the rest of the form completely in black or blue ink and sign and date the bottom.
