MUA, AUA, or UMHS THAT is the question.

    Advertisements

I'm getting ready for the application process and have narrowed my choices down to these 3 schools largely in part because I only have one semester of Physics. I am looking for any insight on what others feel about theses schools in comparison with each other.

I am really a fan of what I have read about AUA, especially there success in landing students in Anesthesiology residencies. However I have concerns about the clinical situation. Also I have noticed that the Basic Science tuition is higher than that of the other 2 schools. For anyone affiliated with AUA, do you feel that the tuition is appropriate for the only hospital integrated school in the Caribbean?

Again any help is gratly appreciated.
PS try not to beat up on me too much as I am new to value MD and this is my first ever post. lol

AUA tuition is inflated definitely. It was much more fitting when it was around 9000 (2 years ago) but the ba-jillion dollar new campus needs funding somehow and I heard its ridiculously nice, with volleyball basketball courts, a REAL large library and even a beach front. So the increased 2000 is definitely worth it for nice facilities. UMHS is still brand new, however I have read many good things about it. Still, at the end of the day obtaining a residency will depend a little bit on your school's reputation and UMHS is still building their's. AUA vs MUA is a coin flip at this point IMO because of the nonsense going on with clinicals. If AUA can fix this problem it will be back on top

Yea, if AUA could fix the clinical problem and also the loan problem, they'll be back on top. If they could do this, they'll join the big 4 in the future. MUA is a little cheaper but AUA is on a much nicer and civilized island... and of course the new campus.

I got accepted into MUA and AUA a few semesters back but decided to go to SMU. Why? I visited each of the islands and the campuses and SMU/Cayman Islands won hands down.

As far as teaching is concerned they are all the same (faculty have moved between all of the schools at one time or another).

The only blackmark is that SMU is dissaproved by Cali but that is only REALLY important if your heart is set on working in Cali.

BTW SMU is New York & Florida approved and it is older than AUA, UMHS & MUA.

If you can afford it come to SMU, if not, the other schools are just as good minus the island (Nevis is pretty backward, Antigua and St Kitts are much better)

I took the mcat. They say that they look at mcats but i'm not sure. I know people that entered without mcats and they just looked at their gpa pre requisites and work experience.

    St. Matthew's University

Remember the most important thing with all of the above schools can you pay?

I got accepted into AUA a few weeks ago, I never really looked into SMU because I heard they wanted mcats. I took the mcats but I didn't do so well so I didn't declare them. Do you think SMU is better than AUA?

I think SMU and AUA are pretty similar but I chose SMU over AUA because Grand Cayman is more modern and comfortable than Antigua, we have better student accomodation. Plus with the school being a few years older we have more grads in residencies back home in the states than AUA.

I understand... how do students pay for the tuition at SMU? because AUA only accepts loans from the bank of lake mills which students have to start paying back interest while they're in school... I'm wondering if it's the same at SMU...... Also is there a lag time for rotations at SMU because I heard that AUA's clinical situation is not too good right now

I was also interested in SMU becasue of the island as well as their success in landing graduates residencies. But like gucci, I do not have mcats and have no interest in taking them. Is it possible to get in without them?
