New student question about textbooks and E-books

    Advertisements

Im an incoming student and wondering if we have to purchase actual textbooks for classes or are they all available to purchase as E-books online? Are lecture notes hand written and given online or PPT files available online? I enjoy reading from a kindle/IPAD and wondering if i can use that to take to class instead of reading from paper.

    thanks.

Potential incoming student here too. Are the lectures recorded and available online via Mediasite? If not are they at least recorded and available in the library?

What about printing? Is there an alloted quota per week/semester or do you have to pay for everything?

Many of the books can be "found" in pdf format, etc. There are a few professors who don't allow laptops in use when they are teaching, however the majority do.
Some professors use hand written notes, others use ppt. I think more use ppt than notes.
Lectures are not recorded and available online unless a student records them and posts for you online..and that will have to be with the professor's permission of course.
Printing was 25 EC cents a page (black and white)when i was there. Can't remember how much color copies were. Not sure if it's changed in the new library or not. You have to pay for everything.

Wow thats pricey at 25ec per page! I heard that customs will charge an obscene amount if you ship any electronics to there, so are there local computer stores nearby where I could buy an inkjet or laser printer (and not get completely ripped off)?

25 EC cents is about 8 or 9 cents US. Pretty standard if you ask me. We pay 10 cents a copy here in miami to give you an example. As for where to buy "cheap" electronics, you have to find them used from a fellow student. The stores down there had to pay those same customs fees.

i'd bring a printer down if you really need one. You can find most books in pdf form from most of the students already here Just ask around.
