    Advertisements

can you please answer these questions for me? you can answer all of em or just one if you feel like... if theres anything else youd like to let prospective students know, please feel free to add!

how do you like the quality of your education?

where do you think the school will be in 2-3 years?

what is the student body like? it seems to me that the majority of students are from New York or Michigan or New Jersey haha...

what are the cadavers like? are they pre-dissected? are they old? what is the ratio of students to cadavers?

what is a shelf exam? when are they administered? how does it count in grading?

what is the island life like? how is housing? is school transportation reliable??

    do students form study groups?

how big is the library? is it well equipped? are there adequate places to study in the school? what are the classrooms like? how many classrooms are there?

is there a kaplan course to help study for the step 1? how does the school prepare you for the step??

are the proffessors proficient in english?? are they willing to help? are there office hours? what about TAs? are there any? do they help? how are they assigned?

For anyone who has attended another med school: how does it compare? what are the differences and similarities?

if there is anything else you would like to add please feel free..

how do you like the quality of your education?

Its decent. I learned most of the high yield and a little bit more. I'd say 70% of what I needed to get over a 200 on step 1

where do you think the school will be in 2-3 years?

Same place it is now, hopefully more organized and more clinical spots. 4-5 years at the earliest for BIG changes.

what is the student body like? it seems to me that the majority of students are from New York or Michigan or New Jersey haha...

This is true, and some from florida and texas.

what are the cadavers like? are they pre-dissected? are they old? what is the ratio of students to cadavers?

ratio HA. 15:1 its ridiculous... but there are lab TA sessions where sometimes its 2:1. sometimes they are 1 semester old. They are not pre-dissected, but the TA's dissect them.

what is a shelf exam? when are they administered? how does it count in grading?

A shelf is your final, and the questions are retired NBME questions. you can find more on this with a search. They make up a decent amount of your grade, and if you fail it then you auto-fail the course no matter what.

what is the island life like? how is housing? is school transportation reliable??

Housing is nice, some places are apartment-ish and some places are dorm-ish. Transportation is very reliable.

    do students form study groups?

    Yes

how big is the library? is it well equipped? are there adequate places to study in the school? what are the classrooms like? how many classrooms are there?

There is a brand new library. I have not seen it

is there a kaplan course to help study for the step 1? how does the school prepare you for the step??

The school prepares you by saying... go take it and come back. Wait... they didnt even do that, 5th semester ends and you are responsible to complete it on your on. Kaplan courses are available for 6000 for the retreat.

are the proffessors proficient in english?? are they willing to help? are there office hours? what about TAs? are there any? do they help? how are they assigned?

All professors are very proficient in English. Most are very willing to help whenever you want. There are 2 or 3 that are kind of busy and ask you to make appointments. There are TA's and they conduct review sessions, in my opinion they are pretty good. They are selected by whoever applies with the best grades.

    Cadavers:

I am currently med 1, We received 6 fresh cadavers spit between 6 professors with 2 classes of 12-15 students. We spend 30-45 minutes 3 times a week with the professor pointing important things out. Yes, we had the opportunity participate in dissection and the school encourages you to learn in your own small groups. With that said; the TA's do 95% of the dissecting and it is difficult dedicating a lot of time on your own.

    Library:

Very, large ( I believe 55,000 sq ft). Mostly study space.

    Study Groups:

There are more study groups and TA sessions than you can utilize. The SGA site lists many of them.

    AUA Student Government Association

All in all, with 2 months on the Island I am happy with the school.

how do you like the quality of your education?
Aua really only has time to teach the High yield stuff. Be prepared to learn the non-hy during med 5 and before step 1

where do you think the school will be in 2-3 years?
Hopefully we'll have Cali accreditation by then, but who really knows

what is the student body like? it seems to me that the majority of students are from New York or Michigan or New Jersey haha...
Most students are from the east coast, I'd say it's very diverse

what are the cadavers like? are they pre-dissected? are they old? what is the ratio of students to cadavers?
I think my lab group had about 18 students... so 18:1. Our class got to dissect, but they changed that right after. So now only the TA's dissect. But, if you get an A in anatomy you can be a TA.... The pay is good and the work is easy, just ask IwanabMD!

what is a shelf exam? when are they administered? how does it count in grading?
Shelf is a comp final adminstered in class over 2-3 hours. Each teacher weights them differently but if you fail it, you have to take the class over

what is the island life like? how is housing? is school transportation reliable??
Island life is amazing, take advantages of the beaches. You'll prob never experience anything like it again... I wanna go back Housing= you get what you pay for. I lived in a top notch 4 bedroom house that cost 4,000US/month. Cabs are reliable and fast. Rentals are even better but expensive

    do students form study groups?
Yep.. one of the best ways to learn

how big is the library? is it well equipped? are there adequate places to study in the school? what are the classrooms like? how many classrooms are there?
No clue, it's new and didn't get to see it before I left

is there a kaplan course to help study for the step 1? how does the school prepare you for the step??
The school doesn't tell you much about the step.. there should be a thread about how to register/apply. It's not hard, but if you don't know where to start it can be frustrating. I didn't take Kaplan, I choose to study on my own since it's ridiculously expensive

are the proffessors proficient in english?? are they willing to help? are there office hours? what about TAs? are there any? do they help? how are they assigned?
If you haven't been around accents before, some teachers will take some getting use to. They are all extremely helpful and I recommend getting to know your professors. There is usually only one prof/class/topic so you only have one choice

For anyone who has attended another med school: how does it compare? what are the differences and similarities?
    N/A

if there is anything else you would like to add please feel free..
