    AUA vs PostBac???

    Advertisements

    Hi everyone,
I'm at a really hard place and having some issues reaching a decision that will be best for me. First, I would just like to mention that I am well informed about caribbean med schools in general. But I don't think that is enough.

I was accepted into AUA for summer but I am having doubts with going to med school in the islands due to the clinical rotation situation at AUA as well as the filtering process that goes on at all the caribbean schools. I have turned in apps for postbacs in the States because I was thinking that it would be more straight forward. But the postbacs will put me back by a year or two. But if I go through AUA and have issues placing to clinical rotations like most students are reporting, it will cost me time and money too. Needless to say, I am very confused and need to make a decision.

I hope somebody can give me some ads and disads with postbacs and AUA, and your personal opinion/experience at AUA regarding the time to complete the MD and likelihood of repeating courses? I don't know much about the loan situation but it does not sound like it is easy for the students to get loans, is this correct. Thank you so much for your honest opinion!

i was in a similar situation exactly 2 years ago.
i had been academically dismissed from AUC after my 2nd semester.
at the advice of a mentor.. i opted to at least keep post-bac as an option..
so i took the GRE's and got in contact with some post-bac programs.
although i was accepted for some programs..
i ultimately chose AUA and started in SEPT2008.
2 things really made the choice for me..
i wasn't willing to gamble on the 2 year masters program i narrowed my choice down to..
because acceptance into a domestic medical program wasn't guaranteed afterwards..
and like you brought up, i would "lose" the 2 years
(the masters would have only been a stepping stone to get to med school for me)

    i am currently a 5th semester student..
with that said.. in retrospect i should have chosen the masters program.
i think my view of my incapacity to excel scared me away from the masters program.
i've never been very disciplined and that got me tossed from AUC.
i've matured a bit since my time at AUC.

the loan situation at AUA is difficult at best.
unless you a bit of personal wealth or a wealthy family..
the current loan situation barely covers the tuition.
also, you have to start paying the interest on the loan back DURING THAT SEMESTER.

the courses and workload can get overwhelming at times..
but as long as you are serious about your time on the island...
you should pull through just fine.
im sure there are those kids that study a tiny bit and have fun all day and do well..
but for most of the rest of us.. we put in the work and at the very least pass.
i think it's unfair to say that ANY course is designed to make students fail at AUA.
...though the teaching for certain classes leaves something to be desired.

    my $0.02...
if you're rich and your parent(s) have a well established practice you can take over..
    join up with AUA!
otherwise try every other angle to become a doctor first.
    -D.O. schools
    -post-bac / masters program
-"big 3" caribbean schools (SGU, ROSS, AUC; all have 50 state accreditation & federal loans)

    good luck.
