AUA becomes the 1st and Only Caribbean Med School Affiliated with a U.S. LCME School

    Advertisements

    August 11, 2009

The American University of Antigua is pleased to announce that it has entered into a unique affiliation agreement with San Juan Bautista (SJB), School of Medicine a U.S. LCME-accredited medical school. This joint effort will offer qualified AUA students the opportunity to participate in clinical clerkships as enrolled visiting students of SJB. SJB has clinical sites in Florida and Puerto Rico. These sites have all the necessary resources that meet the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) guidelines.

In addition, SJB, based on their positive faculty review of AUA, has agreed to give transfer priority to AUA students subject to availability and students meeting their requirements for transfer.

AUA is the first and only Caribbean medical school that has been able to enter into an affiliation with a U.S. LCME-accredited medical school that will provide clinical clerkship opportunities and the opportunity to transfer

This is potentially groundbreaking. If AUA can somehow become a formal extension or branch of this med school- or have students formally transfer for the 3rd and 4th years- then it would go a long way to changing the dynamic of Caribbean schools.

I dont see how this could change the California ruling of having all courses completed at an approved school. If you have completed coursework at a non-approved school and have not retaken the coursework at an approved school, then I dont see how you could obtain a license. This is similar to what is happening to Ross students who go to their Bahamas site.

However, this does open the school up for more rotations which is good for the students. It also makes it slightly easier to transfer - but once again you fall into the same trap unless you are willing to retake the courses.

I've always wondered the CA opinion on if you start at a non-CA school and then transfer to a LCME US school and graduate from it. It's been discussed endlessly about t/f from AUA or MUA or SMU to Ross or SGU. Any ideas?

You can't get a license in Cali unless you completed all of your training (basic and clinical) at a Cali-approved school.
