    Pleaseeeee help me outtt!!!

    Advertisements

Okay so i am a college-bound senior and next year i most likely plan to go to UCI, university of california Irvine. I am definately going to be a pre-med major. During January i started my AUA application. Once i recieved my acceptance to UCI, i decided why bother applying to AUA. Now some of my older friends who went to UCSD (university of california san diego), are now going to SGU in Carribbean to get an MD degree.

I really have no idea. im so confused what should i do. I know 100% im going to be a Pre-Med major because i want to be a doctor.

When i was in highschool, i was an okay A/B student. However, since then, i have built up a stronger work ethic and dedication.

I just dont want something like AUA, severly limiting my possibilities to practicing medicine in the US. I made some mistakes in my high school and thats why im going to UCI. I do however, plan to go to Med school in the US. But after hearing some of my good friends because they did poorly on MCATS, going to SGU, im having second thoughts about finishing my application to AUA.

Im really confused what should i do please help me out

    Okay, take a deep breath.
    Breath some more.
You're not old enough for a drink, so take another breath.

Now, take your application to AUA grab a lighter. Find a safe secure place outside from anything flammable, then burn it.

Go to UCI, do as well as you can (do not goof around.. too much), take the MCAT, and try as HARD AS YOU CAN to get into a US school first. Then, if everything else fails think about the BEST Caribbean school you can get into. If you're from California and want to stay in Cali, there are only FOUR Caribbean schools that you can go to that will let you practice in California and AUA ain't it.

That's because you're still young. One or two more years doesn't matter the least bit. STAY IN THE US!! Remember, you'll be spending 4 years in medical school, and 3+ years in Residency, plus an additional number of years doing fellowship, etc. It doesn't end. Enjoy college.

    DITTO EVERYTHING SOE said above.

    ..the correct answer is:

    1. us med school
    2. SGU, ross, AUC
    3. anywhere and everywhere else.

(note: people argue where d.o. schools fit in..
put it in anywhere after 1. at your discretion).

Okay, don't freak out! Go to UCI get your bachelors degree in whatever you want and do your pre-med classes. Take your MCAT, try to get in a US school. If not the caribbean will always be open to give you a spot (whether you go to AUA, SGU, Ross, AUC, SABA, etc).
Good Luck, stay calm. Get your bachelors first.

It gives you time to mature and choose the right direction for your future studies. If you have an issue with the length of time it takes before everything is said and done -- you may want to look in to a new line of work, or study hard and try to get in to/transfer to one of the US 6 year programs.

I agree with everything said above. Don't close doors for yourself prematurely. Fact of the matter is, no matter how much I screwed up in undergrad, I have learnt so many valuable lessons from it all. I wouldn't be as determined, focused, driven, ambitious, etc., had I not faced the obstacles I faced in undergrad. Two years is NOTHING in the grande scheme of things. You're going to be practicing medicine for the rest of your life, enjoy each and every step because you don't get it back. My point is, go to UCI like everyone says. Try and kick butt like everyone is telling you. If at the end of it all, you didn't do as well as you'd hoped, then you will have learnt a very valuable lesson along the way. Undergrad is full of life lessons. Go enjoy your college experience and do the best you can. Good luck!

The advice you are getting is pretty much right on target. Study hard and go to a US school. However, if you are one of the approximately 60% of applicants to US medical schools who are denied, then the Caribbean becomes a viable and probably your best option. Iím sure this is what happened to your friends who are now attending SGU, and probably to most everyone else who is responding to you on this forum. We all wanted to go to a US school, but just because we are not there, we have not given up on our goal to have MD (and not DO) next to our name.

If you want to practice in cali, make sure the school you choose in on their approved list.
If California is not the end all for your decision then I would amend the list above to read:

    1. US Med school of course
    2. SGU, Ross, AUC or SABA
    3. AUA or one of the other New York approved schools.
    4. No place else in the Caribbean!!!

(note: people argue where d.o. schools fit in..
put it in anywhere after 3 at your discretion).

If I had it to do over again, I would put D.O. in a very close 2nd.
    Step 1 [x] Step 2 CK [x] Step 2 CS [x] Prematch [x] M.D. [x] Step 3 [x] PGY-1 [x] PGY-2 [x] PGY-3 [x] ED Attending [2015-]
