    New Student Questions

    Advertisements

I'm transfering into 2nd semester and have a few questions:

    1) Can I enter Antigua with a one-way ticket or do I have to purchase a roundtrip?

    2) I'm moving down with a girlfriend and want to know good places to live near campus and if I need a car and if I do then what is the best way to get one?

Anything else I should know? Thanks.

    1. The "law" says you have to have a roundtrip ticket to enter the country, but i have yet to see anyone ask to see your ticket. I came back on a one-way ticket. The real reason for the roundtrip ticket is that Antigua doesn't want you overstaying your visa (you have 30 days initially). But during the first week or so of class, the school will collect your passport and you'll be given a 1 year stamp.
    2. There are two campus locations, west and north. 2nd semester classes are primarily held on the north campus, but 3rd semester classes are held on west. (Library is also on west). I think it's best to come down and drive around before deciding on a place. The north side of the island has less crime, but is more expensive. Jolly Harbor (on the southwest side of the island) is cheaper, but you're talking a one hour ride to campus. Cars are also very expensive down here. Expect to pay $400/month for a 1985 POS..more if you want things like windows that work and AC.

Anything else you should know? Check out the student FAQ section.

Same as Cyberia. Never had anyone at immigration ask for proof of a return ticket. Passport and AUA letter only.

With the loan amounts getting cut waaaayyyyyyyyy back, cars may become a bit of a luxury item. I spent two semesters on the island and mostly used the school's shuttle and taxis...and occasionally bumming rides from friends. Taxi's are cheap and I just couldn't see dropping $400-500 a month on a rental.

My last semester on the island, I lived in Serendipity near the old campus. It got a bad rap early on, but I never had any issues with the place (other than the dirt road when it rained - thank God for Croc shoes). It was clean/quiet and any routine maintenance was done promptly as soon as I said something to the property manager. Utilities were cheap there, they had a generator, and I got my entire deposit back. The apartments are a little pricey for what you get, but they are newer apartments and are next to Epicurean and a 12 min walk to school in the morning (you can catch the school shuttle to the new campus if needed). The location made doing without a car a little easier.
