Taking car with you to Antigua

    Advertisements

Is it a good idea to take a car with me to Antigua? I'm comming in May and it seems like I will need a car there. How much is it to ship it and insure it? Should I just buy one when I'm on the island?
    Thanks!

this question would be better suited in the main forum, most of us in clinicals have either never been to antigua or have been off the island for over a year.

can a mod please move this? thanks

From what I have heard, shipping your car is a bad idea. It is very expensive and can take a lot of time to get out of customs. My car was 7000EC, ~2500US. It is just fine, I love it. And cars here maintain value so you stand to make most of your money back when you sell it. Quite a few people rent cars for about 4-5 hundred a month. That way you don't have to worry about oil changes and flat tires (happens a lot on these crazy roads) as much. So there are pros and cons for both buying and renting but I don't see value in shipping your car.

    Good Luck!

Don't bring a car here. Cars here get ruined. My jeep has been sideswiped four times and rear ended in a parking lot. No one ever stopped or left a note. The roads will kill your car. Buy one here and then resell it. If you rent one the car owner will try to scam you out of every penny he can.

A buddy of mine made the foolish mistake of importing his Range Rover to St. Maarten and then Antigua and paid a heavy fee for it (thousands of dollars). In the end he sold it at a loss to the AUA IT guy. I would have advised renting a car in Antigua 3-4 semesters ago but the last time I was there (a semester ago) the number of scammers had increased quite a bit. There's cons to purchasing as well since you will have to find a reliable mechanic (which can be difficult) and parts are not cheap or easy to come by--it took me 3 months to get a hold of a Kia Sportage headlight. Still, I did manage to sell the car before I left albeit at a small loss compared to what I paid for it.

I purchased a navy Toyota Tercel while in Antigua and was very lucky that I never once had car troubles with it other than flat tires which is to be expected. I sold it for a small loss but consider it a gain overall when compared to the amount I would have had to shell out for a rented car. Actually, the 2 people who purchased it from me should be in 4th semester now so if you see that car for sale...it's a good one!
