Taking over a year for the STEP

    Advertisements

A friend had informed me last year that if a student waits over a year to take the STEP exam at AUA, then they must pass it first attempt in order remain enrolled in the school. Unfortunately, this is not the correct information.

I called the Registrar today and found out that if you do not attempt AND PASS the Step within a year of fifth semester, then you are automatically withdrawn from the school. If you attempt and fail, you must retake it within the same one-year period and pass it in order to keep enrollment status.

If that happens, you must "re-enroll". That is what students have to do in order to get reinstated to the school after a year if not having taken the exam by then or after failing it and not passing it on a repeat attempt within the year.

The point of this post is to inform students to not rely on information given by other students. Contact the school regarding their policies as they sometimes change. Do not rely on other students for what academic policies are.

by the way, when you say a year of fifth semester, does this mean at the beginning of fifth or the end of fifth?

End of fifth semester. I finished fifth semester on April 23 of 2008, so I was told my one year to take the step with a passing score is April 30 of 2009.

I dont know what the school's Comp Exam policy is anymore, but I was told that the school MAY ask you to take the Comp and get a passing score of 60% in order to be able to sit for the STEP exam if you have to re-enroll. Therefore its not an absolute, but a possibility.

Therefore, try to pass within the year.

if you don't pass and have your results within a year you will be withdrawn and when you reapply you will have to retake 4th semester and if you pass fourth you will have to make above a 60 on comp before the school signs your form 186 to take step

And sometimes even contacting the school doesn't work. The registrar came down with an edict a few weeks ago that was promptly contradicted by the Dean of 5th semester. So, sometimes, not even the school knows what its policies are.

Whatever I posted was from seeing a good friend of mine very recently go through this process. Sometimes people have personal or family things come up not allowing them to take step in time. Even if you have passed basic sci you will be re enroled as 4th semester and will have to get above a 60 on comp in order to be eligible to take step again. Other schools like MUA and Windsor will ask you to repeat 4th as well.

No you do not have to repeat the 4th semester at Windsor if you wait longer than a year to take your Step 1. If you fail than you have to attend a USMLE prep course in Carbondale IL.
