    Crime and Student Safety

    Advertisements

So....I know there is crime in places anywhere you go and to have basic common sense such as do not go places by yourself at night to avoid danger etc.

I have read that crime is getting really bad on the island and lots of killings and robberies are taking place more so than usual (majority is drug and gang related.) I know some students have been robbed but has there been any murders that anyone has heard of of students?...I heard it's pretty safe on campus and in student housing areas but what about once you decide to get your own apartment off campus? Has anyone had any bad experiences or can tell me places that should be avoided?

Like I said I know stuff happens anywhere you go in the world and I think Antigua is beautiful but just curious to know of the do's and don'ts and how it is out there and kind of get a feel for the atmosphere and safety.

If anyone can shed any light thats been Antigua for a while I would appreciate any info.

    Thanks.

No killings against students or anything. The majority of "bad things" that happen to students usually occur at clubs/bars AFTER the student has consumed large amounts of alcohol. There has been 1 non-local murder this year (A boat captain in English Harbor) and there were 2 high-profile ones last year (british doctor and her husband). One student did get robbed last semester when a guy followed her home from the grocery store. That was the only "major" crime against a student that i heard of. Antigua is basically like any other large city in the US. Don't travel alone at night, (especially women) and use common sense.

As far as crime goes this place isn't bad.

What about getting an apartment off campus? I have also heard of a lady being robbed but not harmed. Are there any bad areas to stay clear of as far as living? Being a woman I just want to be safe.

You don't have to worry about that right now. All new incoming students have to live in housing provided by the school, which are in safe areas and night security guards. Although the cops are hard to find, the locals are very helpful and nice. There are of course a few bad apples in every crowd and this place is no exception. The school will provide you with transportation from your student housing to the school, and back. The only time you'll be off campus is for grocery shopping, which is a 10 minute walk from campus. There hasn't been any incidents to my knowledge about students getting robbed on their way there, and I've been here for more almost a year now.

Btw, there's more serious things to worry about here on the island. Like watching out for drunk drivers and the kamakazi cows! 'nuff said.

my friend's friends' friends got robbed twice but she was dumb enough to leave her door open while napping. I also heard of stories where locals used ladders to climb up to balconies and steal laptops and eat food (yeh, I kno!). Just close your balcony doors (if the balcony is low) and keep all doors locked. Travel in pairs, don't walk alone, you know the deal.

I was more worried about the potholes and dogs more though...

That whole ladder to the balcony thing...yeah...happened to my neighbor when I was down there. They broke through a window on the second floor after having broken in the week before. Both times, just stole food! And no, this isn't a friend of a friend story. This was my friend calling me while barricaded in their room with me trying to get a hold of the police! No one was hurt either time luckily.
