What is the extended basic science program?

    Advertisements

What is the extended basic science program? How does it differ from the regular basic science (what extra classes do you need to take)?

I currently have a Science GPA of 2.6, CGPA of 3.1, and MCAT of 23... idk what category of admission I fall under or if I will even be accepted.

Thanks for all of your help!

EBS is taking less classes so you're on the island longer. For instance, your first semester you'll only take Anatomy and DPS in EBS..as opposed to Anatomy, DPS, and Histology in the "regular" basic science. If you maintain a 3.0 average you can take a "block" course (take histology over the 10 day break) and then register for the full courseload the subsequent semester. Or you can choose to remain in EBS and basically take 1 or 2 less classes per semester..(you'll be on the island at least 1 more semester..sometimes 2 more than the regular 16 months (4 semesters).

I'm in extended. My first semester I took Anatomy and DPS. I had the option to get out but chose to stay in. 2nd semester I had biochem, genetics, and histo. 3rd semester I had immuno, path I, neuro, and physio. This semester I have micro, behavioral, and pharm. Being in extended isn't bad. But once you've been here for awhile you do sort of sometimes think "maybe I should've gotten out". But oh well.

EBS has its merits, and offers more applicants an opportunity to attend med school. However, please keep in mind that AUA will continue to charge you the exact same amount per semester as, say, someone taking 4 classes when you are only taking 2!
I truly hope that the school will reevaluate this policy, since staying on the island for more than 4 semesters at $20K+ adds up to quite a sum. The admission and EBS requirements are seemingly becoming more stringent as we speak, yet there appears to be no policy for adjusting the already overburdened financial restraints. There's an adjusted price for block courses, so why can't there be a different price tier for EBS?!
I, myself, have not had to deal with these issues, but I know of quite a few EBS students that are passing their classes, yet are still struggling to figure out their finances for the duration of their EBS studies (with practically no support from admin) as we speak.
On the other hand, however, (and in support of the school) it seems that if you maintain a GPA of 3.0+ in Med-1 and take the Histology block over break, you are practically guaranteed to be taken out of EBS and continue on the track of accumulating your debt just like the rest .
These are all just unofficial evaluations as I've perceived them since coming back to the island. For more clarification, please contact AUA directly...

So is EBS for students that have a lower GPA and will probably perform better with a smaller course load? I am applying to AUA but I haven't taken Gen Chem 2 or Orgo 2 so would that mean I would be in pre med and EBS since i only need two more classes to finish pre med?

EBS is only in the med program. If you're only missing a few classes in premed, you would more than likely be placed in a modified premed program..(This is up to the Dean of premed, however..Dr M) You would probably take the 2 classes you need..plus A&P and maybe micro/genetics (depending on if the class schedules permit) Depending on your gpa in premed at aua, then you'll be placed in either extended or regular basic science (3.0 gpa = regular basic science..lower means extended.)
