    Overbooked and wrong housing?

    Advertisements

I don't understand AUA or how it handles things. I arrived on the island yesterday afternoon and I had a very clear understanding that I would be staying in Amor Villas and had a single apt...as I was told by my student coordinator which was my first choice in housing (she explained everything on the housing and what it included etc.). Turns out when I got here they put me in Sugar Mill and I have a roomate and no single. What a set back from the original...

While back in the states I had to hunt down my coordinator by leaving numerous messages and emails and she would not get back to me until a week in a half before I was to leave and thats when I spoke to her and she let me know where I was to stay. It is so not organized and unfair to the student. The excuse was overbooking if that was the case why do they wait till last minute...I mean if they told me from the get go that I was to have Sugar Mill than fine but I was under the impression I was to have what I wanted to pay extra for while living out here for 5 semesters.

Is there any way they can change my housing?...Is any other new students having the same problem?
What are my options or am I stuck at Sugar Mill?

    Thanks.

Welcome to Antigua..where you find that NY has NO IDEA what goes on in antigua..this is how the school operates. You have to learn to deal with it, and how to "finesse" to get what you want. There is a time (usually about 2 weeks) that you can put in requests for changing rooms. Note it will be a "request"..Pat H is the lady who's in charge of all the housing (a local). You can try talking to her now, but she'll probably tell you to wait..but it doesn't hurt to go ask now. Welcome to the "rock".

    cyberia's nailed it.

    antigua/AUA isn't all that bad..
things just don't work as fluidly or quickly as they do back home.
    but that's to be expected..
hell.. even things back home don't work all that well.

    people will disagree..
but im on great terms with Pat H.
and i feel this has made some situations easier.
as with anything.. unless you're from ny..
try and be courteous and polite.
it does seem to go a long way down here.

    just to note..
amor villas (and most other student housing)
won't allow students to continue living there past their 2nd semester..
just too many incoming students who get first dibbs.

The coordinators in NY are worthless and you can't ever get through to them. I know everyone keeps saying welcome to AUA...lol. I bet this happens quite frequently amoungst a whole lot of other ** that I will go through but yes I will learn to deal . I will try to get ahold of Pat H. and see what can happen, I don't mind waiting but would like to get a single somewhere I don't care if its at Amor at this point.

    Thanks for the advice

Not sure if you know this but they were the ones who met you at the airport...were they "worthless" there as well?

Single room housing is only for students that are married (the coordinator should have told you this). I used to live in Sugar Mill, it's not too bad. Suck it up and just be happy you got one of the newer student housing places. Welcome to Antigua, it won't be anything like the US so don't expect the world because you will be sorely disappointed.

It's not 100% that single housing is only for married students..but married students are given the priority over "single" students. And write down NWS's last statement..he's exactly right.

I asked a simple question. Don't get tied in a knot over it. Good luck!
