    does california recognize AUA ??

    Advertisements

So I've been doing extensive research on exactly how far AUA is with california accrediation and this is the situation:

According to Pat, who works for the California med board, AUA applied for accrediation in March of 08. This is what she said:
1- It takes approximately 3 years to decide whether or not it will be a recognized school.
So students enrolling from now (in AUA) till about 2010 or 2011 are taking a RISK, if they would like to eventually practice in the state of California. So say, AUA does get recognized as a legit school in 2010. Those students enrolled between 2008-2010 may or may not get licensure in cali. It all depends on how the medical board decides. SABA was recognized in 2004 by cali. Luckily for their case, students enrolled from 2002 would be allowed to practice in cali.
The situation with AUA may be similar hopefully? (crossing my fingers)

2- If you are currently enrolled in AUA or any other school not accepted by california, you cannot transfer into an accredited school (SABA, Ross, St. George, AUC) and practice in cali. All credits would go to waste. Hence, cali expects you to have done ALL coursework in an accredited school. so dont plan on starting off in AUA and then transferring out with the intent of evenually practicing in cali. not gonna happen

I've read the report about why St.Matthews got rejected, and it seems like enough emphasis was not put on researching and a track record of alumnis wasn't adeuate. (pg 29 on st.matthew report on california med board give a quick summary) The progress AUA has made over the past 4 yrs is amazing. Being a current student, I only see the school getting better in the future. I believe this school will eventually get approval from cali. Not all of the requirements have been fulfilled up to this point, but in due time i think it will be. However being a student NOW, your putting urself at a risk by attending AUA. If you want to practice in cali, id say go with the safer bet of AUC; most rotation spots for a carib school in cali.

Single post newbie endorsing AUC. Looks like someone is nervous about AUA getting California approval. OP is right about one thing, AUA is coming up fast and will surpass AUC which has been in a steady state of decline.

I don't think this is a troll. Seems like good info for current and prospective students.

Welcome to VMD, OP. Sorry some of our fellow members are a bit rough around the edges.

Your post has some great info in it, as you took your questions directly to the medical board. For that reason I think the OP (original poster) actual post is better than most on VMD.

    I hope AUA gets Cali!

Good info. Yes. If a prospective student's main priority is practicing in CA, AUA is not yet a good option.

Only reason I surmised a troll is because everything stated has been mentioned ad nauseum here on VMD and alas, AUC is the panacea. I just call 'em like I see 'em, 'rough around the edges' notwithstanding. But as Dennis Miller said, "Hey, I could be wrong..."

Yup I wouldn't have called it a troll post (albeit a clever one) if AUC wasn't the only school mentioned at the end. Saba and St. George are better choices, maybe even Ross.

I'm actually gonna be starting my 4th semester at AUA. Just biting myself for not doing extensive research on the matter beforehand. Oh well, nothing I can do now. Just hope for the best.

And as far as this stuff being on the forums before, yes it was, but all over the place with some missing info. Figured the research a did for a couple of hrs could come to use for prospective students coming in, so they don't make the same mistakes I made.

So you made it through 4 semesters of med school yet you were oblivious of California approval the entire time? How on earth did you make it to med 4? Seriously.
