    Histology Shelf

    Advertisements

    Hi Guys,

I'll be taking the histo shelf at the end of the block because I couldn't take it during the semester for health reasons, and as most of you know, dr s is using a new shelf as opposed to the one he always based his test q's and s-drive review package on...

do any med 1s or ebs med 2s who just took this shelf have any suggestions on how to prepare for it?
i'm pretty worried because from what i've been told it's crazy hard and not at the same level as what the minis tried to prepare you for

thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Get a cell bio textbook and start reading that. (Unless Dr S starts teaching cell bio). My cell bio course i took at AUA's premed prepared me more than then entire histo course..

    Hi Cyberia!

Did you just write the Histology shelf? If you have any tips other than the one u gave me about reading a cell bio text book I'd appreciate it a lot!

it's just I don't know how feasible it is for me to start reading a cell bio text at this time. Was Dr. S's package or mini questions helpful at all?

I was just reviewing my notes from his class and looking at the book and his package.

Thank you very much for any help you could provide

No. His material was for the previous shelf. On the current shelf you'll be lucky to get 1/6 questions using his "study packet". I am serious about cell bio book. Start looking over 2ndary messengers, hormones, receptors, etc.

the histo BRS is a lot more in depth than where the new histo shelf is concerned..
sadly.. as highly as i do hold the histo professors..
it sucks that course was taught tailored to the previous shelf.

Dr. S's packet imo probably covered ~60% of the new shelf.
tho i felt a lot of questions hit on stuff that were just mentioned in passing in class.
so the bulk of the stuff we learned (was emphasized) prob. only hits like 50% of the new shelf..
it's odd how little i remember specifics from the shelf.. =/

    -2nd messenger mechanisms
-cell-extracellular space interactions (desmosomes, focal adhesions, etc..)
-CH. 2-5 of the textbook (lotsa cell bio)
-muscle chapter details (contraction cycle, the bands)
    -hemopoiesis
    -respiratory pathology
    -digestive system
    -endocrine system (hormone production/secretion)

hope this helps and good luck.
lots of us walked out of there shell shocked.
..it definitely wasn't a walk in the park..
and i honestly don't know what else i could have done to be better prepared..

    oh wow

    thanks for the tips
dr s has been saying that it's the same material as the old one, just asked in a convoluted manner

I have a mid 70, i hope i don't fail the shelf after doing his packet, minis, and now my notes

The average for the histo shelf was 62. Only five people failed. Source: Dr. S.

So, come on....this whining about how he didn't prepare the class for the shelf is refuted by the shelf scores. A 62 average is respectable, especially given the confounding factors....

Dr. G handed Dr. S. the shelf grades a few minutes before he told us about them, so there wasn't time for Dr. S to figure out a curve or anything.
