    Antigua Customs

    Advertisements

On what items do the customs guys charge $$ on? This will be my first time coming there.

    1. Will they charge me on my laptop?
    2. Do they charge on packaged food (popcorn, kraft dinner etc.)
    3. Im also going to be bringing some spices (like indian spices if you know what i mean), would they charge me on this?

    Thanks

they can charge you for whatever they want. I wasn't charged for anything, luckily. Others are charged for random things. Rules: 1. Never leave anything in its original wrapping (new laptops and electronics especially); 2. Never accept the first offer given by the customs, it's a bargaining process, as long as you do it respectfully, have a certain amount of money in 1 pocket and explain THATS ALL you have.

What about food items like kraft dinner? Removing them from their original packaging would be aloott of work because I have so many boxes of them

Yeah removing kraft macaroni from the container just isn't practical. I always go through "nothing to declare" and they have never searched me. What other people have told me is that if they do search you you say, "Oh, I didn't know, this is for me so I didn't think I had to declare it." Play dumb. It works very well around here...not just for customs. "I didn't know" is the best excuse in the world!

    Don't say for other students:

Also don't say this is for other students.
Say everything is for me and my family who is going to live here. We all going to stay here for 2 to 3 years. Yes, remove all those boxes from original packaging. All spices and masalas remove the original boxes and write it down with marker on each plastic bag with your own language.

We all going to stay here so all is PERSONAL EFFECTS.

Don't argue with Customs. So far most of the students had no problem.

    Good luck.

removing from packaging was meant mainly for electronics....I would not suggest filling your suitcase with noodles and cheese

remove everything from it's original packaging...ESPECIALLY ELECTRONICS

but you really shouldn't have a hard time. just let them know you're a new student and you're just carrying things to help you get by on the island

smile, be polite, and crack a joke or two if you can

They wont charge you anything as long as you have one laptop. If you have two laptops, they may give you a hard time tho.
