    Failed Anatomy by 1%

    Advertisements

    Hey guys,
I am so frustrated and depressed right now almost at the point of breaking down. I feel so dumb, defeated and useless.

I had an average of above 60% going into the shelf, so i needed a 53 going into the shelf. My grade report today says 52 on the shelf. GREAT. I failed the class by 1 %, really? I really am not able to believe this. I counted my questions in the end of the shelf and it came to be above a 54 % for sure. I was so sure I will pass this class.
    How is this possible?

My question is, has appealing worked for anyone in the past? Will they ever recheck your shelf and reconsider your grades? Has this really happened? Forget about having to repeat the class, I will not recieve any loans.

Please help me out guys, if you know anything about appealing or personally know anyone who appealed and it worked out for them.
I m down in tears right now, really makes me doubt my capacity to handle med school. And thanks to my amazing parents they are nailing it in my head that I failed because I am dumb.. Its like life never sucked so much for me...
sorry for the rant, please help me out...

Please, DO NOT let anyone tell you that you are dumb, and I mean your parents or anyone. That's complete and utter excrement.

Get a recount on your exam, or do whatever you have to do. Don't give up. I know physicians who failed a class at one point and are practicing now.

DO NOT QUIT. Feel bad for a night, drown your sorrows in Dr. Pepper, eat a box of Oreos, whatever. Tomorrow is a new day, find the way around this obstacle and drive on.

If anyone gives you crap about it, hang up on them until they can be supportive. You don't need that.

Keep your chin up, rockyroad. No promises, but it sounds like there may have been some issues with grade-reporting...

Get a re-count. If that doesnt work, move on and forward.

    Best of luck!

If your parents can't be supportive then it's time you started ignoring their opinions regarding your medical education. Besides, you're on loans and doing this yourself, you don't need to hear their b.s. on top of an already difficult situation--it's not easy being a student in Antigua. Send in your appeals form, ask that they re-check your grade and also explain any possible reasons that could have caused a lapse in your shelf score that day.

If the worse possible scenario happens and you have to retake Anatomy, it's not the end of the world. If you continue to work hard and take block classes, you can still catch up to your original class. However, that shouldn't be priority for you, just work on passing through at a pace you are comfortable at. Good luck.

There are plenty of people who have failed at something, remember it's not the failures but how many successes you've had that will mean anything at the end. Einstein failed math, and had plenty of failures before his theory of relativity. Don't let the failed course bog you down too much, and MAKE SURE they recheck your exam! Good luck!

i feel there is something fundamentally wrong with the policy.

i don't understand how someone who is passing a course going into the shelf has to repeat the entire semester based on one final exam that the professors didn't write.

if you passed the profs course, obviously you're going to pass it again the second time around. thats not the problem. your problem was the shelf. Either you had a bad day or the profs didn't prepare you enough. logically, it doesn't make sense to spend 4 months passing what you've already proved to pass.

secondly, how did your other shelf exams go? were they also borderline?
when i was on the island a bunch of my friends didn't pass either and they just took a course during the break and caught up with me so it was no big deal. if your appeal doesn't go through don't dwell on it, just reflect on how you can improve and do it. remember you're on the island for 16 months, not 4 months. look at the big picture, you'll be done in 16 months.. just sacrifice a break and you're back.
