Cell phones and text messaging on the island?

    Advertisements

I read that we are better off bringing a quad band phone to the island, but was wondering what types of cell phone plans and features are offered by the local cell phone provider.

Does the local cell phone provider offer text messaging and alternatively do students really use text messaging to communicate with each other? Or is it mainly through just voice calls?

I'm just trying to figure out whether to bring a Blackberry type phone (with a QWERTY keyboard) or just a cheap old Motorola phone.

You can use either. Students bring iphones and blackberry phones..or they buy the cheap phone offered by the providers. Most students use prepaid plans (where you pay 100 EC and it's deducted slowly as you use the phone), but they do offer pay as you go plans too. And all the "features" are available (text, voice mail, even data but data is pretty expensive) so it's up to you what you want to bring.

Quadband unlocked phone is your best bet.
