Electing to take a semester off

    Advertisements

    Hey all,

I was just wondering if it were possible to take a semester off after Basic Science in order to prepare for, as well as actually take Step I, prior to starting the 5th semester introduction to clinicals?

    Is this a good Idea?

If it is possible , you will need to pass the COMP with 58 or better on the island, I heard that they will change it to 60 next semester, additionally you will have to make sure that you get your step1 test date during that 4 months window , in your desired location.
    Good luck

if you take a break BEFORE 5th , it will get you many unnecessary Qs during residency interviews

    Why

Why would it result in questions during interviews?

The only reason I asked is because I heard that it is better to take step right after completing basic sciences rather than after the 5th semester intro to clinicals. Main reason being because almost all the material is taught during basic sciences as compared to that taught in 5th semester. Also, I was wondering if there were any requirements for taking step that you acquire during the 5th semester?

AUA doesn't allow students to take Step 1 prior to completion of 5th Semester.

    Why

Is it merely a school policy or are there requirements set by the NBME? If it is just a school policy, is there a way to petition individually in order to be able to take the exam right after completed basic sciences?

Not sure why you would bother trying to "appeal" this sort of policy. It's the school that certifies you for Step 1. If you haven't met the minimum qualifications the school requires for certification...you won't be certified.

you can try to appeal, however, i dont think its likely.

you're basically askin to take the step1 before you finish basic science program (5th semester is part of basic science program). whats to say that students won't start appealing to take step1 after med3 or even med2? i think the precedence this would bring wouldn't suit AUA too well. i'm just thinkin from the admins point of view here and playin' devil's advocate so don't be offended.

obviously, it never hurts to write an appeal so try it out and let us know what response you got. best of luck, friend.
