    Jan 09 / Summer Vaca

    Advertisements

Hey guys, i am starting basic sciences in Jan. 09 and was wondering if most people or any student at all take the summer off. If not, are there any breaks during the summer? Or do most people just do 16 months without a break?

    thanks

You can leave anytime you want..just take a semester off..but most do not..simply because you want to come here..get the basic sciences out of the way..and get the hell off the island.

there are 3 breaks given a year..
    one after each semester.
the one at the end of the september semester is the longest..
usually a little over 2 weeks.
the other 2 breaks are a couple days shorter.

AUA runs on a trimester schedule so summer is not given off..
i guess you could take a leave of absence or something..
but if it isn't for critical reasons..
(e.g. time to decide if medicine is for you, financial difficulties, etc..)
i don't see why you would want to..
like the person above me said..
get in.. put in your 16 months..
and get the hell back to the states (or wherever home is).

I personally know a student from my incoming class that took a semester off for the summer and is now back finishing his third semester. I wouldn't recommend it because you could get lazy, but you are allowed take a leave of absence.

I have seen people take their own self-imposed breaks during the semester but it has only been to their detriment...the pace is rather fast at AUA, and missing a week is like missing 2 or 3 important chapters. Honestly, the 2-3 weeks in between semesters is enough to get you revived and ready for the next semester, but some people even take that time to study or take block courses. I took block courses every break except between 3rd and 4th, and I never suffered from fatigue during the semester. After you take step 1 and you are waiting for greenbook clinicals, you will get more breaks than you need!
