    5th semester Adventure

    Advertisements

Can we get the current 5th semesters to give us updates from time to time about 5th semester, especially about NY? I know it was mentioned before, but that was at the beginning and I'm sure things changed from then.

Also, do you guys have any advice on what to get ready for registration NOW? I have the list, but should something be done ASAP? I already have an appointment set for a physical, but thats it.

What do you wanna know? We are practically done in NY!!! Next semester there will be 2-3 additional rotations in the hospital to the ones we have this semester. Oh, and our comp average was a 4 point improvement from our average in Antigua and 2 points above the over all average in our class.

I guess I need more information regaring the HIPAA and Blood Borne Pathogen certificate. How long does this take, should I start now? And can we do both online or should we register for a class somewhere.

Specifically about 5th, I'd like to know if the semester lightened up a bit. Islandthrift, I remember you mentioned that you hardly had time to study for USMLE, did you get more time eventually?

Well, right now the work load is mild at best while those in miami are really busy. Our Comp scores went up over all compared to miami. 11 showed improvement, 1 stayed the same and 2 went down. Not bad stats at all. Our comp ave of the 14 of us from 4th semester was a 56.something and our comp average in NY was a 60.something while the overall average was a 58.something. Compared to the comp stats of last semester, the highest comp ave at any site was a 59.something. So yeah, we have less study time at home but what we are doing in the hospital seems to be paying off. If I could do it all over, NY all the way!

    Statistical analysis

With all the due respect, I think that the statitical analysis presented by Islandthrift is insignificant because of the sample size. If i'm correct the number of people in NY (known as N in statistics) is much smaller compared to Miami , as a result the calculation/estimation for SD is different. Without going to the calculation itself , the small N causes a larger mistake in the mean quality So comparing the 2 means is comparing 2 different types/qualities of variables. We can overcome this problem by building confidence interval (FA 2008 page 68 on top)

    Good luck

I was just telling everyone the numbers that our prof showed us. If you don't want to go to NY, then don't. Just sharing the info since it was asked how we are doing in NY.

islandthrift, how was your housing in NY, was it easy to find housing that was affordable and near to the hospital?

If you get housing through the hospital, a studio is $600, a single is $700, and a double is $1000 ($500 a person). The housing is on the hospital campus but it is run down and they are slow to fix things. There are housing options that will do a 4-6 month lease but it can take some convincing and sometimes extra fees. Usually telling them you're a med student does it. Expect to pay $800 - $1300 a month off the hospital campus
