Things you can't buy on the island?

    Advertisements

I know there is thread stating particular things we need to bring with us when we arrive on the island, but I want to know certain things that I can't find at all on the island.

    For example does anyone sell?:

    -protein powder

    or

    -natural peanut butter

    or

    -used desktop computer

I'll probably add more to the list, but these were three things I use quite a bit over here and wasn't sure if I could find them at on the island.

Feel free to add anything else which is commonly available in the US, but not in Antigua.

    Thanks.

    Motivation (from the locals)
Happiness (from all med students who advance to the next semester..the ones who fail.."they're at the bar having a miller" as Dr S says..so they're happy)
Desktop computer-there are computer shops around the island..but plan on paying ALOT for them..remember..especially with electronics..you're going to pay about 40% more for them in antigua than you would in the states..Instead of buying a desktop, i would buy a regular size keyboard, mouse, lcd screen (if your laptop is small) and docking station for your laptop.

Natural peanut butter? As in organic PB? That i'm not sure..i know a few of the stores around here have JIF brand..peter pan brand..and a generic brand (made in the US). But to me..PB is PB (and poor med students like me live off PB&J) and the generic tastes just like PB in the states..

Protein powder i'm not sure..never bought it myself (either here or states)..maybe someone else can take that for me.

edit..almost forgot..Sympathy..it was in stock at the bookstore..but not anymore.

You can get protein powder at National Health Fitness Center, but it's quite expensive, and probably soon to expire cause i don't think anyone buys that too often here in Antigua.

Yea whey protein in antigua= lots of money... The 10 lb bag of optimum whey protein that is maybe 55 to 80 dollars in the states is about 210 us down here... Outrageous... Beef jerkey is really expensive to.. However... Steaks and chicken are super cheap and if you invest in a grill first semester (a negotiable 190 ec about 70 us for a tailgate webber) you will not need to supplement with the powder.

Also invest in a cooler down here first semester.. I can't count how many times its came in handy (expensive as well about 150 ec or 65 us for a medium hard rubbermade)

    O yea

bring a good multi vitamin bc ironically a lb of green bell peppers cost the same amount of a pound of sirloin,.... About 8 ec per pound or 3.50..
AND THE RED AND YELLOW BELL PEPPERS ARE TWICE AS EXPENSIVE ABOUT 16 EC PER POUND...
Vegetables are scarce and expensive... All they have on this damn island are cucumbers... And im allergic... Go figure...

ORANGE JUICE FROM DOLE IS ABOUT 12 EC OR 5 US AND THE SAME FOR A GALLON OF MILK

CANNED FOODS ARE EXPENSIVE... WISE ENVESTMENT FOR DOWN HERE A RICE COOKER...

YOULL BE STUDYING.. NOT WORRIED ABOUT EATING TOO MUCH BC WHEN YOU DO YOULL JUST FALL ASLEEP BC OF THE HEAT

Yes. Everything you have at the supermarket at home, they have on Antigua. Some food items are a buck or two or three more expensive and there is less variety. Definitely bring protein powder if you need it. Chicken is cheap, electronics are beyond expensive, but it's all here.
