Need Help Immediately !!!!!
Hi everyone,I am a canadian citizen and soon applying to Xavier University. I recently graduated from high school. Xavier's 4.5 Pre-med/MD program is really fascinating to me. It can save my 4 years.But still I have doubts. Would you guys recommend me to go to Xavier? is it a good school? I know its pretty new... but is the quality of education good there? If I graduate from there, would I get a residency spot in Canada or US?THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION: Which campus is better? Aruba, Bonaire or Panama? I have heard that Aruba is bigger than Bonaire, so there is lot of gambling and drugs going on there... whereas Bonaire is very compact.. and is less expensive... Is that true? Which one should I apply to?I have also heard that there is no proper arrangement for housing and food... we kinda have to find our own apartments and make our own food.... Wouldnt that be too much? When will we find time to study?I havent applied to any other canadian or US medical school because it takes sooooooo long to become a doctor... 8-10 years is a normal duration for medical students...Please guys help me ASAP. I really need answers to my questions !!!Thanks.     |

Hi
I would recommend not goin to XUSOM for pre-med. First of all the premed program is a joke, it wont instill the good study habits u need to be succesful when studying for USMLE. Secondly when applying for residency and stuff they do look for more mature students. I would highly recommend goin to undergrad in US or Canada and trying for medical school and then goin off to Xavier (or carib). You will be more mature and will have much better study habits to be succesful in Medical School. |

Thanks WPW for the reply but my family doctor has heard of this university and has encouraged me to apply there. He said its a good opportunity to complete medical school at an early age and the faculty is pretty good too. He also said that there would be no problems in getting into residency in US/Canada after graduating there because some law has changed and considering both local graduates and IMGs at same level. So, I will have good chances in that...
Should I follow him or not?? PLEASE HELP. Thanks. |

who is ur family practioner? I am a current student at this school and in Atlanta currently doing rotations. Look the way i look at it is you still have chance, i tried to get into med in Canada and got rejected. IF i could do it all over again i would work even harder in undergrad and get into canada just because it is smooth sailing once ur in.
As for getting into residency, its not a problem but it is a challenge. U have to do better then Americans and shine. It is tottaly up to you in the long run, but my advice would be try Canada atleast. Try first 2 years and if you have a GOOD GPA and u write the MCAT and get in, you will be much more thankful. P.S Also i dont know if your Canadian or American. but getting residency in America is not as difficult, but if you plan on going back to Canada it is much tougher and you have to write their exams. You even have to write the american exams but you are prepared just for the American Exams. |

well I m a canadian citizen and currently live in Canada... I havent tried any canadian/american medical school yet because they all need bachelors so i m not eligible to apply yet... though i got admitted to SFU for bachelors (which is 4 years)... after that.. applying to med school which is 4 years ( I know its childish but I dont know if i can be committed for too long ).. thats y i m sooooooo confused where to go !!! So far my plan is to practice in Canada... A question off the topic (just curious to know): If I graduate from a carribean med school OR a canadian med school OR an american med school... is it possible to practice in south-Asia (India) ??? i know that they dont recognize MD program... they have something called MBBS (thats all i know). I know its a weird question coz I dont know these govt rules at all... so if u know anything abt it.. i'd appreciate if u let me know. Thanks. |

I dont know about praticing in INDIA. ANd as for commiting for 4 years my friend, Medicine is a life long commitment, make sure ur willing to do it. You have to continue to read and write board exam after board exam. Even after ur a practicing physician you have to read and write exams every so often! So dont think its 4 years and your done!
I would highly recommend trying in Canada and going to School in Canada atleast for a year or 2 to get a feel of college. If that doesnt workout carib should be your last resort. |

If you want to go to med school after high school, check out the 6-year programs in Europe, South and Central America, Australia?, Asia, China (is 5-years). All these will get you a medical degree -- MBBS or Bachelor of Medicine.
Coming back to Canada to practice, if that's your goal, will require some consideration. |

WPW as current student at xusom how was the basic science in Abuba? Does xusom have good prof in Aruba? Have you taken the USMLE 1 yet? How was the clinical rotation? After gradution does xusom student can get license in the states of Florida? I am accepted for the MD program at Xusom Aruba (jan 08 ) but I have a second thought. Tell me your experience at Xusom. Do you have any suggestion for me? |
