    Questions about Windsor Pre-med

Hey guys, sorry if this question have been answered already..I just couldn't find it on the forums. I'm considering going to Windsor uni for my Med School studies, and i was just curious about the Pre-med program.

For the pre-med, are we supposed to have a certain GPA to continue onto Med-1? I was looking at the Windsor site and it says that the accepted pre-med students are "guraunteed" to go into Med-1. Is this true?

Also, if i happen to do bad on the pre-med courses, can i repeat them or is there some sort of penalty? How many times can you re-take a pre-Med course? I know that i won't be doing bad in any of these courses, but i'm just thinking about the worst case scenarios.

    Any help would be appreciated.

As long as you pass all of your courses, you'll move on to MD1. If you fail a class, you'll have to retake the final in order to pass. And I've heard stories of students failing multiple times, but haven't seen it happen yet.

I'm sure you must have read on the board here that doing premed at a Caribbean university isn't advisable. In good conscience I have to let you know, just in case you haven't read it already. Premed courses count for NOTHING outside of Windsor. If you intend to transfer, they won't count. Also, if you're looking to practice in the states, some states require a minimum number of undergraduate credit hours from an accredited university in order to obtain a license to practice. Windsor premed doesn't count for those credit hours. Just a word to the wise.

to add to what swoll said, its always advisable to do your premed in a canadian or US college or even a community college and then start MD1, its cheaper and your credits are recognized.
In case you are out of high school please read this thread http://www.valuemd.com/windsor-unive...graduates.html

I would definitely recommend doing your undergrad work in Canada or the States first. If you don't go all the way for a bachelors at least go for the required prereqs or 90 credit hours needed by most US Medical schools. Its what an extra 6 months - 1 year in school and who knows you may do well enough to enter medical school in the states or canada.
Windsor students need to whine less and study more

Hey, Yeah i've read about the 90 credit hours policy. I really appreciate the fact that you guys remind students about the policy in a lot of these threads. I have a feeling many students apply for the med-schools, without even knowing about the whole "90 credits" issue.

Realistically, i'll be applying for Windsor for September 2011. I'm doing my diploma in Microbiology right now in a community college. I'm in my 3rd and final year. I've already contacted some universities here in Canada, and i'll be transferring to the 3rd year of a 4 year BSc program once i get my diploma (If the Caribbean uni's frown upon my college credits and ask me to do uni). In other words, i'm not opposed to doing my 90 credit hours/BSc here in Canada before coming to the island. Certainly my goal is to get out of the island as quickly as possible.

I actually wanted to ask you, does the 90 credit hours policy apply for Community Colleges as well as Uni's? or are the credit hours viewed differently for community colleges?

I already have 1 year of bio/chem/bio-chem/microbiology credits from my college. I just have no idea how they'll be looked at when applying to Windsor. My GPA is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, not too spectacular at all.

Hey can you actually expand on the "communite college credits being recognized" part? Do you know anyone who has done this.

I'm doing a 3 year Microbiology program at a Canadian Community college right now, and i'm in my final year.

they do not care about community college vs university. I know that the texas law states that undergraduate credits to be considered valid are those that are acceptable for transfer into the University of Texas at Austin

You've done 3 years at an accredited college, so you're perfectly fine. I wouldn't worry about it. You'll meet the minimum requirements for the states.

as far as i know a community college credit is no different from a university credit. Also with your gpa you may have a chance at sgu, ross or saba if you take the mcat so i will consider those before windsor

Hey thank you guys for the responses.

Do you guys recommend me applying for the pre-med program or straight to Med-1?

I'm applying for Sept 2011. By then, i'll have the 3 years in college experience along with 3.0ish GPA. I was looking at the site, and i came across this..

    Premed-MD program:
High School Graduate - 12th grade or equivalent (Who do not have one year of Biology and Chemistry after high school)
MD program: Undergraduates or students enrolled in Undergraduate programs with One year of Biology and Chemistry after high school.

Chemistry (with labs) 1 year General Biology 1 year Physics (with labs)1 semester (recommended)
    Details

    MD Subjects
    12th grade( US and Canadian High School graduates)1 yr (2 Blocks)4yrs( 10 Semesters )

    • Basic Anatomy·
    • Basic Physiology·
    • Cell Biology
Refer to the Course detailsBachelor of Sciences with one year of Biology and Chemistry or 12th grade (International high school graduates with Biology and Chemistry in 11th and 12th, eg: India and other Asian countries with the eligibility to medical schools in the country of origin and graduation)Not Required4yrs(10 Semesters)Not RequiredRefer to the Course details

I fall under the "MD program" applicant, except for the fact that i won't have a Bsc degree. I'm not sure what the protocol for this would be.
