Thread: question about books

hey guys,
i just have a questions about the books situation..i know you could either buy ur books from amazon or whatever or you could give the school a deposit and then borrow the books from the school. now, if i that do, will i be able to take the books let's say on housing and return it by the end of the term or i just have to use them in the library? i need some clarification..

also, books are expensive..should i buy them? if yes..how?

You pay the 300 dollar deposit and you take the books home with you. You only have to give them back at the end of the semester. Also, you can check other books out of the library if you need them. I would imagine that buying books would also help you, like when you're done on the island and studying for step 1, an anatomy book would probably be good. I just use mine from undergrad (because quite honestly, the anatomy book they give you isn't worth a damn). But I would DEFINITELY buy the BRS books for each class. Just on our most recent internals I saw a few questions taken word for word from BRS. And it's a really good review right before an exam if you're already done reading the slides/book. I bought mine on amazon.

If you "rent" the books, you can take them with you as long as you like. However, to get books for the next semester, you have to return the books from the previous semester. I would not do this. I would purchase your own books, and then sell them if you dont need them after the semester is over. The chances of you getting that deposit back in full is probably pretty small. Will you spend more than $300 getting books for 4 semesters, probably, but you get to keep the books at the end - which you can sell to someone else. I would strongly suggest checking out amazon or half.com

You get to take them wherever you want once they give them to you.

Students have said they got stiffed with having to pay for them because they got damaged and they were annoyed they couldn't mark in them because they were renting them.

That being said I think those books are a poor source and would buy they books listed in the Review Books Thread. Those books are better sources that the teachers use.

I mean I can tell you what books to buy for MD1 - Baby Moore for Anatomy, Guyton for Physio, and Langman for Embryo. I would also buy the BRS anatomy and physio. Not sure if you'd need it for embryo. Its not that high yield. Windsor tends to use books that are either way down on the totem pole as far as good sources, or they are only available in India. Look through the forum and find out what other students are using - remember that you are using this as a means of studying for the boards, so studying what the boards need you to know is most important.

1- do windsor use these books?
2- i currently live in canada, should i just buy these books before coming to st kitts
3- isnt there a list the university provides where all the students study the same books?

I spent alot of time searching this forum and SDN. And basically the list above is what I'm bringing with me. Those are some of the most recommended textbooks. However I also have Guytons for Physiology.

I wouldnt get both the lippincott physio and BRS. They are written by the same person. If you really want to learn physio - get Guyton. If its not in Guyton, it doesnt exist. But for board prep - Ive heard the physio BRS is the best if you know it forwards and backwards.

I think I will just buy the books before coming to st kitts..the problem is luggage weight..
although i am still confused about which books i should get..in the admission package, it says that students shouldnt buy the books because windsor provide them but i later learned that you need to study for step 1 and so windsor won't provide the books, so I might as well buy them from now..

I am such a newbie, i wish there was a clear list of which books i should buy before coming to st kitts..i dont wanna buy the books and find out that the professors wont be using them..
