Joining Windsor Pre-med

In the Windsor admission pre-requisite I note that they accept students who have passed their 12th Grade. I will be passing 12th grade in an Indian school in Kuwait with Physics, Chemistry, Bio & Maths as the main subjects and expecting about 90% marks. Please advise if I can get admission in Windsor after the 12th Grade and if so I would like to join the pre-med programme before going into the Basic Science programme or should I join the Basic science directly. Since I will be a landed permanent resident in Canada next year and hence I suppose I will not have problems getting a US visa at the time of clinicals in the US.
Another alternative is to do an undergraduation in Canada and try getting into a medical school in Canada after MCAT. If I join Windsor after 12th grade, do you think I will have problems at the time of licensing, as minimum 3 years of undergraduation is required in most states before joining an MD program. I look forward to the valuable inputs of all the student and visitors to this forum out there.

Thanks.

Re: Joining Windsor Pre-med

If you're going to be a landed permanent resident in Canada, I strongly strongly suggest you do an undergrad degree in Canada, do MCAT and try for a med school in Canada, US or even Australia. Work hard in your undergrad, volunteer at the local hospital and just study hard and you can do it. An undergraduate degree gives you a good background as well as it's something one can fall back on should for whatever reason if a career in medicine is not possible.

While the pre-med program at Windsor sounds great (i mean being a doctor at 21?) it's not the best 'short-cut' one should take when pursuing a career in medicine. There are reasons that the majority of medical schools require at least 60-90 credits of undergrad, MCAT before accepting a student into their school.

Best of luck with your decision.

My advice

Hi,

My advice to you is to definitely do your undergrad before going for med school. I know India has a very different educational system...so I know that you can enter medical school after 12th but honestly at 18 years old you lack way too much real life experience to appreciate the medical field and education! Also, coming out as a medical grad at 21-24 isnt as easy as you may think in America. Patients are very skeptical of such young doctors. Other than that, you will be able to make a better, well-educated decision of what med school you want to go to and how to go about your career. Caribbean medical schools are very tempting but the truth is that American (US and Canada) med schools are the best bet. You dont have any licensure probs in American med schools while foreign med schools give you the oppurtunity to follow your dreams but they come with alot of fringes attached. Foreign medical schools should definitely be a last resort. I mean if you dont make it into a medical school in America than you should consider going the alternate route.

Geeta

Hey

Yes I would ahve to agree that you should definitely not join their basic science program right away...do the pre-med courses and it would be even better if you decided to stay in Canda to do them...this would be a hwole lot less expensive!

wow....a person from kuwait so which school did u go to...wow 90% that is great...i would advise u to look at european medical schools....or if u think u can maintain that gpa undergrad in canada as u wish......it is 3-4yrs undergrad then applying to med school......check out the omsas site for that info...http://www.ouac.on.ca/omsas/
in your case i am pretty sure there might be a visa problem later on...

Don't Join Windsor Pre-med

If really want to get the medical degree without the undergrad (which I do advise against, but I'm no one's parent-atleast not that I know of)...go to a European medical school. I'd recommend either Poland or Hungary. They have a 6 year program, or a 6 year + 1 (premed year for people who's highschool sciences aren't up to par). The amount of hours you'll accredit will be enough for licensure in the US. I personally know people that have gone to either countries and are licensed in the US.

school

mos definitely you wanna try to be a "normal doc" first. like everyone else said, you'll be saving time, but it comes with a lot of other headaches, i.e. licensing requirements, funky schools/teachers, etc. the kind of people that end up in a foreign med school usually have other circumstances that made them choose such a route (like $$, scores, etc.). do undergrad, study like a psycho and end up in a good us/canadian school.
