I'm from NYC. So getting NY approval is huge for me. Let's pray that we do!

You best bet is to pick up a copy (used or new) of first aid for the wards. It explains in excellent detail what to expect. The experience will differ from location to location, but always keep in mind: because you are from an overseas school you will need to work twice as hard as every other med student to be seen as worthwhile. Lots of people slack off and get by, but you pay for it when it comes time to apply for the match.

As a general rule, if you are on an inpatient rotation, expect to arrive in the hospital by 5 am on average and dont leave until the last resident leaves. On some rotations that means you are done by 3pm .... on some... like surgery you dont leave till 10 pm. If you have a high load of patients you are managing then you may need to show up even earlier.

Whenever you get done you go somewhere and eat and study until you fall asleep. When you have downtime during the day... read... medicine and surgery recall are allways good to have on any service.

You'll probably get 1 day off per week. When you are in clinic its 8-5 with no weekends so that is kind of nice.

Know your patients better than anyone else and never forget that most physicians have never heard of Windsor and will not trust you at all. If you are doing well... people will look you in the eye and say things like "why do you go to a third world medical school?" If the attending physicians dont say anything, then expect that things are going poorly and work harder.

Trust me.... clinical years will not be fun until you know what you are doing. You must enjoy medicine or this will be a waste of your time.

I've only been at Windsor for my fourth year. But thus far I've completed rotations at the University of Texas - Southwestern (Dallas), University of Florida (Gainesville), John Peter Smith Hospital (Fort Worth), and the University of Tennessee (Knoxville). I will be spending my the last 6 months in Dallas at UT Southwestern.

i dont go to windsor, but i can speak for florida in general. windsor is not an approved school in the state of florida for long term electives. however i do believe doing one or two electives from a non-approved school is ok with extra paperwork.

the problem i see here is that ANY school (approved or not) HAS to have a WRITTEN AFFILIATION with the hospital to do ANY ROTATION (includes electives). this is a state of florida rule and all hospitals have been following it for the past year. i know because i helped set up two written affiliations for my school in florida. let me tell you that it was an extreme headache doing it and all those hospitals would not have set up the affiliation without the school being florida approved.

now for university of florida (shands), this particular hospital does not allow any foreign students to do rotations. i know this because i called during my florida inquiries to get AUC affiliations. it can also be explicitly stated on the following link.

Senior Elective Catalog

U-Tenn knoxville will only accept from LCME schools as well as shown by the following link.

University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine - Office of Student Affairs - Visiting Student Guidelines

this is the reason why i am suspect at best to some of this poster's list of elective rotation sites and at worst, all of them.
