Physiology1 MD1 (Stress), help
I'm so frustrated guys. I really work hard and study. I think today's physiology 1 interval #2 was a revenge exam against the little kids who talk so much in class.
But it really is not their fault. The first day of class Dr. P could not talk at all. He kept laughing with his hand in front of his mouth, so we could not hear a thing he said. Because he was so nervous, he would continuously laugh with his hand in front of his mouth, and this took place for several classes. He's just a goofy guy that other students cannot take seriously. He jokes around with students about going to Ziggys and drinking. Students have seen him drunk with other teachers. The teachers really should not be going to places where students hang out at. They should be an example. Dr. P really does not want to teach. He avoids teaching in anyway possible. Twice a week we have case studies in the afternoon, but during lecture he will still have someone present because he is not prepared to teach. Our class starts at 9:30 and he arrives at 9:35. After saying hi to everyone he begins lecture at 9:40. Last Thursday he taught only from 9:40 to 9:50, 10 minutes! Then at 9:50 he took attendance. We left class by 10. How are we supposed to learn such an important subject when he does not want to teach. This occurs at least three times a week where we have at most 15-20 minutes of lecture. One class he only covered 4 slides. On the exam he put questions that are not in our slides. One question I know for was not in the book either. I know I have to learn all these concepts anyway, but all I want is a fair exam. All the other teachers have given fair exams so far. My parents tell me I should stay quiet and should just read on my own, and just pass the tests. However, if the teacher could not teach, but at least tried to teach for 40-50 minutes each lecture, then it would not bother me. But Dr. P is dishonest and he does not even try. He is so lazy. Only one other student in my class has complained to the administration about the problems in our class. He is a bright guy too, so if he is having issues, then we all are in trouble. I do not know what to do. I think last semester Dr. V gave revenge tests too, but at least he taught. The best part is that Dr. V is going to teach our class twice a week now, but the other students do not want him because now they actually have to sit through 50 minutes of lecture. I do not understand why the other students who are serious in the class do not complain to the administration. Any advice from anyone above MD1 would help. I think I am wasting time worrying about this. I should just keep studying hard. If you are an MD1, please say something to the administration. The admin thinks Dr. P is putting a lot of effort into teaching us, but he is doing the bare minimum. For those of you who got revenge tests last semester in Physio, how did you approach your studying? In our tests I guess he is going to put concepts we did not cover in class, concepts we barely touched, and few concepts we covered. For those of you thinking about going to this school. All the teachers are good, except this physiology 1 teacher, so please do not get discouraged. |

MDforLife,
Take it up with Dr.Sun explain to him what is going on with the class and the prof. I guarantee you that he will take care of the issue for you. As far as Dr.P ,I have spoken to him before and he is a smart guy. He has a PhD in Physio and is doing research in FL. He knows what he is talking about, if your class would let him speak. And never ever count on power points. Read the book always. The BRS is great for Physio.

Physio 1 class
I did speak to Dr. S about our class. A few of us have taken the effort to make sure students are quiet in the class. But with 84 students in the class, you can't control everyone. There are clowns in my class. I hope the school some how weeds them out.
I guess I am just frustrated because I have done really well on all the exams so far. I guess there is always one that challenges you. I am studying hard and I will continue to do so. However, I don't think you guys know Dr. P like I do being his student. He might be a bright guy, he might do research in FL, but he really does care about teaching. He avoids teaching as much possible. Two days a week we have case study in the afternoon, yet twice a week he still has case study during our class. I think because he is not prepared to teach. Last week he told us he is sleepy. I put in the effort as a student. I just want him to meet half way. I would understand if he at least taught 40 to 50 minutes and actually showed he cares. Thanks for all your suggestions guys. I read guyton every once in a while, but just for a few concepts I don't understand. I think I have to read each chapter we are doing in class. This is the first time in academic career I have had to go see a dean or administrator about students talking during class. Dr. P gets frustrated with the class and then he quits teaching. Why can't he try to control the class. He doesn't try. We have to rely on Dr. Sun telling students that they have to behave in physio. I told Dr. P to kick the students out of the class, but he doesn't have the guts to do it. He is too nice of a guy. When I told him to kick them out, he said they all get 85 on their exams so they are studying. I really doubt they are getting 85 on their exams. Second, I am getting 90's on my exams, so why should my learning environment be effected in class. I don't care if they are supposedly getting 85, I am working for something bigger, 90+ on the USMLE. |

I'm not complaining
Whoever said I am complaining. The purpose of my post was not to complain.
It was to get advice on how to modify my studying for physio, so that I can do well on any question given to me. I guess I have to study everything BRS, Guyton, etc. Second, to create dialogue and to motivate other MD1 students to help control the other students in our class. Also, to maybe speak with Dr. Sun or even Dr. P on how we can improve the class. I wanted see if others are feeling the same frustration as I am. I really can't relate to a lot of the students in the class because they are really immature. Maybe there is someone else who is serious in the class that reads these posts. After all there are 84 students in the class. I understand there were problems in physio 1 last semester, so I wanted advice from students who went through what I am going through now. This forum is to help each other out. Instead telling me that I am complaining, please offer some advice. That's all I wanted. Thanks to all of your suggestions. |
