Thread: SGU vs Ross for veterinary medicine..

Hey all,
I'm new to this forum and I'm considering applying to SGU and Ross Vet med. Can anyone out there give me some CONSTRUCTIVE advise re: quality of program, passing of ECFMG exams and NAVLE passage rates. I have looked through each website thoroughly, but I would like to hear from current students. Right now, my heart tells me SGU, but my brain says cost is a limiting factor, considering current job salaries. Also, how many students from either school are accepted into residencies in the US?

Hey i visited both schools before i made up my mind. I recommend SGU!
1. alot of Ross Students tranfer to SGU
2. Bigger island
3. more tech advance school ( ross is investing money in making their facilities up to date.)
4. bigger school
5.school is more apealing to the eye, Ross is a bunch of trailers place one next to each other and they are all grey
6. you need titers for rabies if you bring your dogs to Ross. @ SGU you only need a HC for your dogs and that they are up to date in their vaccines.
7. SGU its Fall and Spring and they give you 3 weeks in dec to go back home and the whole summer so you can work and earn $$. at Ross you have to stay there Fall, Spring, Summer and again. You only get 5 weeks total between all 3 semmesters. You dont finish early!!! it take the same ammount of time 4 years, so dont let this fool you.
8. Ross Accepts 125 or more students for fall so you might have to sit on the floor. If you fail a class at Ross you have to repeat the whole year. At SGU you fail a class you only retake that class. Ross is owned by a big *** company.
9. you are by the hurracaine belt!
10. Overall SGU its a better investment than Ross!!!

I am going into my 3rd term at SGU SVM. I have no regrets to choosing SGU over Ross. After looking at the pros and cons of both, I decided to just apply to SGU and was accepted last Fall. The school has new facilities such as the vet teaching hospital joint with the GSPCA, and the new anatomy lab. You will have many opportunities at SGU, like hands on wet labs, hands-on surgery your 3rd year, video conference with Cornel's necropsy lab, and much more. Plus a supportive faculty and staff that are determined to see you succeed. I have met a lot of great people down there and am eager to get back to my studies (leave in 6 days). Money-wise... yes it's an investment but well worth it. Good luck with your decision.

Its nice to hear the vet school is coming along well. I remember the first brochure sgu put out for it...It included a picture of a bunch of students curled aroudn a cut pooch...reading a "disection of the dog" manule. Theyve since airbrushed that I think.

Our school's getting good recognition and reviews in US vet schools. We will be graduating our charter class this October... big announcement on the SGU website about it right now. The brochures have become more appealing to the eye... they now have a guy reclining on an easy chair w/ his dog in his lap, licking his face. Cute.

We vet students are few compared to the med school but we make our presence known. It's nice to have the acceptance of the med students. But there's some regard us as the 'partiers' and say we don't do any studying, which ofcourse is not true.

Do you know how we would go about setting up our own forum for the vet school? I enjoy answering questions of the incoming med students but there's some things I just can't answer for them since I'm not in that program.

With the recent sale of Ross to Devry it is the most powerful foreign medical and vet school out there. By the way, I heard Ross is seeking US accreditation for there vet school. Don't be fooled by St. Georges, they have nicer buildings but Ross has the power in the states.
When I was debating as to which school to attend the chief of surgery at a
MAJOR university hospital told me "Go to Ross they are very good".

Dont be fooled; there have been issues regarding the purchase and sale of ross for years now. Issue regarding the former heads of major US universities, the mayor of NYC..etc. Its a non issue.

Ross does not have "power in the US" to do anything for you that AUC, SGU, Irish schools can't do for you. Again- it comes down to pass rates and match lists which you can all check for youself.

That's great, but those former board members did not Gross
$600 million like Devry made. I dought that St. Georges has these pockets. Money is power my friends. Ross has it now.

all the best to ross students, but it is a fantasy to think that what you perceive as power will translate into any help to you, the medical student. Ive no problem with the concept of ross (or any)students doing well, doing better in general, or doing better than sgu students. But the reality this change will not likely translate into any functional difference in your opportunities or that of you peers. This isn't to say I dont wish you the best; but it is misleading to yourself and to others to suggest otherwise. No amount of money will buy away the notion in PDs minds that Ross, SGU, AUC etc students are people who failed to get into the US medical schools. They will not buy you residencies. If the money is well placed the best it will do is buy you better facilities, better teachers and subsequently even better performace on the board. Please dont read this to mean that you dont do well in this capacity to begin with. But you should understand the way in which this money and influence can -and wont-help you.

FYI one way in which both Ross and SGU did use influence to the students benefit: shortly after sgu was founded, the licensing boards made foriegn grads take a separate exam from US students that was much tougher. ROss and SGU pooled influence (****** is well connected and Im sure folks at ross were too) and won us- IMGs- the opportunity to sit the same exam as US students- since then its been the USMLE. THIS is where influence helps us most. BUt iut wont help your job hunt.

Ross Vet Med has been seeking accreditation for years. They haven't received it due to the fact there are few active research programs.
