Failed step 2 CK twice, how to retake?

    Advertisements

    hello everyone.

So I am in need of some much appreciated advice or guidance. After reading many forums I have finally decided to post my situation in hopes someone will let me know what they think.

I have studied almost every popular source you can think of, USMLEWorld, Kaplan Qbank, Kaplan notes, Kaplan Videos, DIT, MTB, step up to step 2 and etc. All of this, of course, over the last 2 years or so (sticking with one/two sources for each test time). I have changed my study strategy each test time since what I did last time didn't work so well, which is why I failed, and changed my game plan for a "better" strategy.

My scores on step 2 Ck were 186 first time and 1 year later 190 second time. Now that I am studying to take it a third time I will not take it until I pass the NBME with very high marks, however now that I am 5 months into studying I don't seem to be making much improvement on my scores (taken 2 NBME self assessment tests and both scored close to 200).

Kind of at a dead end on how and what to do for preparation. I work full time and unable to take an extended break/vacation to study so need to study around my schedule.

Any advice or even motivation is much appreciated

    Thank you in advance!

First of all Don't give up on your dream! Second you need to be more specific, did you take step 1 already? If you haven't you might be lacking foundation and starting with something which gives you more science might help unify and make sense of some of the higher clinical problems. If you have, well then your situation is a bit harder. I have a friend with a similar story which failed step 1 several times and when he started studying differently he passed step 1, step 2, step 3 the first time. What was his magic chage? QUESTIONS. He told me that he didn't pick up a textbook for a long time with just doing questions. Do questions until they are second nature. Until you have a very good sense not only of the right answer but of what they will be asking you on the test even before you do. Hope this helps.

That does help, thanks fresh M.D. for your reply. I do tons of questions and could probably do more. I always feel I lack knowledge but I notice I seem to be able to easily narrow my choices to 2 answers and more commonly pick the wrong one Or maybe I will miss ONE word that changes the whole question. I have read some suggestions on the forum on the order in which I read my question (with last sentence first, skim/review answers, followed by the reading the actual question from the top last). I just started doing this so we will see how much it helps.

To answer your question, yes, I have taken step 1 and passed.....on second try. Score was barely passing unfortunately, However I passed! So I will take that over fail anytime.
I failed the first time by a few points and retook in 2 months and literally passed by a few points (2 to be exact) and all I did was questions for the second time around studying for step 1. However over the course of 2 months even then my score increase was not much, just like now.

    Thanks again for your reply.

First off, sorry to hear...I can imagine what a tough situation this must be.

    As far as study habits:
    1) Limit your sources (UWorld is a must and choose another source and just stick to that).
    2) The older NBMEs are kind of useless, do NBME 7 and see how you do.
    3) Assess the weak areas and improve them as shown on your NBME.

Other than that, I can't really say much other than lather, rinse and repeat. Good luck.
