According to...

First Aid it says:
0-6 months is E.coli or Group B strep
6mon-6 yearsis S pneumoniae, N meningitidis, H influenzae B
6 years-60 years is N meningitidis
>60 years is S pneumoniae

hope this helps.

Beaker is on a distinguished road
n meningitis

according to kaplan notes, group b strep, e. coli and listeria are most common in infants up to 1 month.

1 month to adults is N. Meningitis (now that H. flu vaccine came out)

elderly is Strep Pneumo

So I think its c N. Meningitis

Read this.

This is part of an article in "Infections in Medicine" 04/18/03. I found it in Medscape.
Patient Age and Comorbidity Help Predict the Causative Agent
When you suspect that a patient has bacterial meningitis, you can use the patient's age and comorbidities to predict the likely causative agent. It is crucial to go through this exercise for each patient in order to choose appropriate empiric antibiotics. While Streptococcus pneumoniae infects all age groups, Streptococcus agalactiae affects the very young and Listeria monocytogenes affects the very young and the old. The majority of cases caused by N meningitidis occur after infancy but before age 60. Haemophilus influenzae has become an unusual cause of meningitis for all age groups.

According to this lecture, then, the answer would be S. Pneumoniae. (b)
And also, I agree with Beaker. Newborn is up to 1 month old.

Way too much info!

The reports might be as such but for purpose of this exam and for that matter any other test question I have seen you do not have a 5 month old getting Strep meningitis. The answer for the purpose ofthis exam is E. Coli or strep B for that age group. Both answers are usually not given together. If they are then you have to read into the question to find thw source of the bacteria.
