Is it saft to use Aztreonam or Clindamycin during pregnancy? How about Metronidazole and Sulfamethoxate/trimethoprim?
Is it saft to use Aztreonam or Clindamycin during pregnancy? How about Metronidazole and Sulfamethoxate/trimethoprim?
Aztreonam crosses the placenta and enters the fetal circulation. Studies in pregnant rats and rabbits, with daily doses up to 15 and 5 times, respectively, the maximum recommended human dose, revealed no evidence of embryo-or fetotoxicity or teratogenicity.
Clindamicin-Safety for use in pregnancy has not been established. (so NO)
Metronidazole-Metronidazole crosses the placental barrier and enters the fetal circulation rapidly. Reproduction studies have been performed in rats at doses up to five times the human dose and have revealed no evidence of impaired fertility or harm to the fetus due to metronidazole. Metronidazole administered intraperitoneally to pregnant mice at approximately the human dose caused fetotoxicity; administered orally to pregnant mice, no fetotoxicity was observed. There are, however, no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Because animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, and because metronidazole is a carcinogen in rodents, this drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.
Sulfamethothrexate-Pregnancy Category C: In rats, oral doses of 533 mg/kg of sulfamethoxazole produced teratologic effects manifested mainly as cleft palates. The highest dose which did not cause cleft palates in rats was 512 mg/kg of sulfamethoxazole. In rabbits, 150 to 350 mg/kg/day increased maternal mortality but had no deleterious effects on fetal development.
Well, Aztreonam -safe for use ,other no !
Sorry -Sulfamethoxate! -Pregnancy Category C: In rats, oral doses of 533 mg/kg of sulfamethoxazole produced teratologic !
Thank you, guest, that is great.
Only Aztreonam is documented to be safe for pregancy.
Clindamycin has not showed any harm to pregant women and fetus so far but should be reserved for the last choice because of other severe adverse effect, like Pseudomembranous colitis.
Metronidazole is restricted by pregnancy because newborns have a decreased ability to metabolize this medication and accumulations can cause peripheral neuropathy, seizures, irritability, and profound gastrointestinal disturbances.
Sulfanomide is restricted by pregancy because it can cause Kernicterus by competing the binding of bilirubin with albumin.
