    question was on boards

One of my friend got a question 3 weeks ago (last week of October) about licorice candy. The question was where does it act on Adrenal steroid synthesis or something? Can anyone tell me, does it inhibit the cortisone syntheis from cortisol, (inhibit the enzyme 11 betahydorxylase) what is the significance of it.
    Thank you

man i cant believe they asked that.....that was one of those way out there questions and the only way i knew it was from lectures in chinese herbal medicine.....basically, its not the candy.....that doesnt contain true licorice anymore, theyre talking about the root. If i remember correctly the active ingredient is glycyrrhizon (sp?) or something like that. I cant remember all the details but i know high doses can increase aldosterone secretion so it is useful for Addisons disease.....I'm not 100% on this so you may have to look it up but im pretty sure about the aldosterone secretion

no you read what i wrote wrong.....i said it could be useful for addisons but as far as i know it is not standard treatment.....its not the actual licorice its the glycyrrhizon. i would have to see a list of enzymes to answer that. Like what im saying is it depends on the question and what the answer choices are. Since it has apparent mineralocorticoid effects i would believe that it could cause the same changes to other enzymes as aldosterone does but it really depends on the question if you see what im getting at
