NY is very friendly to international medical graduates so it makes it easier for you to match a residency there, in contrast to other states. The general idea is the more states that are approved the more chances you have to match. Some people prefer NY because it is close to their homes. If you care about where you want to match based on regional or personal preference issues then you should worry about which states are approved.

it's not that big of a deal if you don't care for that state. for me, i'm from maryland, so i couldn't care less about NY approval. programs don't care whether or not the school has NY, just whether you can do the job and if your credentials are sufficient. the general program has never heard of any carib school, including the big 4.
