Thread: financial Aid For UMHS

Hi all I have been accepted to UMHS and am very intrested in attending. But I am really worried about the money and loans sistuation. First of all I don't have any property that I can borrow aganist, (as one person suggested) I am single with no kids so it's just myself but relying on family is not a option, my family is not well off, I am a U.S. citzen now I plan on enrolling in Walden but can anyone else tell me what they did? Also I don't have the greatest credit history due to going crazy with credit cards in undergrad. Please let me know what you all have done.

You could do the right thing and go to one of the better "big 3" schools (SGU, Ross, AUC) instead. These schools have title IV loans. I started out at SMU when they had loans that were easy to get. Halfway through, they lost loans. I was in your boat, nothing to borrow against, no rich family. I was lucky and was able to transfer to one of the "big 3" for clinicals. It was a major headache, I had to repeat a 5th semester and was set back a year for the match. I should have started out there to begin with.

I am not here to bash SMU, UMHS, or any other school, but be smarter than I was. If you don't have mommy or daddy paying your way, don't go to a school you can't afford. If you can't get into SGU, Ross, or AUC right away, take some county college classes, up your GPA, retake the MCAT, whatever. You already got yourself into financial trouble with credit cards in undergrad, don't do the same with med school. In all seriousness, this isn't a "other schools suck" comment, it is just good advice from someone who has been through it. Good luck.

I would but I have already borrowed money to take a post bacc program I cannot afford to wait any longer I am a older student. I was rejected from St. George. I am hoping UAG will accept me. I just need to know my options as far as aid goes.

Start thinking outside of the box. There are schools in Europe that have Gov't loans and even have rotations in america.

UMHS has a limited in school loan program, but it is not really enough to cover the costs of the whole schooling. You should definitely try a european school with title IV

UMHS doesn't have a US bank lender. I believe the school offers an institutional loan. The school basically opens up its wallet for you. You can borrow up to a certain amount and must pay interest while attending. Once separate from the school, you will have to pay the amount back in full. This how institutional loans usually work.

As far as I have been told, there are no more federal loans at UAG. Check with other students about this for upcoming classes.

What are the students thought on the in house loan? What are the requirements? GPA, FICO, etc?

I was wondering if there have been any further updates on UMHS being able to receive federal aid. I'm very impressed with the school as a whole and would love to attend, but being able to afford it is my concern. I'm looking at hopefully starting in Jan 2013.

No federal aid for US citizen. Only Ross, AUC, and SGU.
