    Question Question concerning Laptop/Tablet Computer

    This question is directed to current students of UMHS...
    Okay, so I see that students are required to bring a laptop/tablet computer with specific requirements. I'm trying to decide whether to buy this Laptop in the US or buy it at the bookstore over there. Does anyone know how much the UMHS's bookstore sell the Tablet PC (Toshiba Portege M750) for?

    And also, do I really need to bring a printer?

    I would very much appreciate a reply

    I'm not quite sure; the tablet requirement is enforced starting w/ your semester, so I never had to get one. From the grapevine, I heard that it's in the ball park of $2 500. UMHS official can give you a better estimate. I'd say that if you can get it in the US, get it in the US; it should come with a better deal.

    As for the printer, just leave it at home. They give you free copies of the lectures and an additional 700-800 free prints per semester. Also, if you think about it, the point of the tablet is so you can jot things down directly on your powerpoint, which IMO eliminates the need for hand written notes. I don't think I've used a pencil more than 10 times during the semester, and most of those times I was filling in scantrons XD

    Hope that covers most of your stuff.

    Thanks Calvin

    If it is $2500 US then it cost way too much compared to $1699 or $1799 here.

    Yea, I figured that would be the case with the printer.
    Once again thank you.

    Calvin,

    They just require a tablet right? Meaning, it doesn't HAVE to be the Toshiba, but it has to be a tablet. Thanks.

    Yeah, it's just that the model carried by the school is the Toshiba. I believe that the Toshiba is one of the better ones out there; it dwarfs other tablets in terms of size, and it has a lot of processing power w/ a decent sized HDD. I guess that could be why the school is pimping it out lol

    How are we supposed to budget a $1700 tablet PC when the loan states we only receive $1400 for books and supplies? I think if the school is going to "Require" an item to be purchased they should at least offer some sort of student discount or increase the amount dispersed for books and supplies.

    lol that's a good question. Tablets are only being enforced starting w/ your semester, so maybe they're going to revise the loan details; my laptop was a little over $1G. Thank god I didn't have to pony up 2 000 US for a tablet ^^;;

    I actually think that the school official said that only a LAPTOP was required beginning May, not a tablet. He said a tablet was just recommended and that it would make life a little easier.

    I don't think bringing a laptop was mandatory before, even though I'm sure it was highly encouraged.
